How about we go back to the mid-season “Chiarelli appreciation thread” guys and see who the crow-eaters are?

Looks more and more like Stauffer isn't just dumping bags of lye on Chiarelli's career corpse just because...these moves KG has made really signify Chiarelli put himself on an island and made these moves against everyone else's thoughts.

Here is Hitchcock’s words the day of the trades for petrovic and manning:

“It’s really hard to make trades when you’re in the situation we were, injury-wise, so Peter and (assistant GM) Keith (Gretzky) especially, deserve a lot of credit for trying to help us here,” said Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock.

People are kidding themselves if they think Gretzky didn’t have anything to do with it.

The coach the day of the moves is specifically pointing out the important of Keith Gretzky in these two deals.

While I was as never big on Cags it’s been what? 6 weeks? Cags is playing with Toews and Kane now and Manning will clear waivers. Nuff said

Hawk fan in peace ...
If I may speak for other CHI followers, we don't expect Caggiula to play top 6, let alone 1st line for long, but he sure looks - plays - like a legit bottom 6er and Chiarelli gifting (word chosen carefully) Bowman w/ that deal STILL leaves Hawks fans' jaws dropped.

Make no mistake, Manning was BRUTAL on the Hawks this year - and w/ their defense that's saying something, believe me - Hawk fans kinda cannot believe ANY club took Manning (and his contract); that Chiarelli sent back a roster player for him was and is, mind-boggling.

PS - Brandon Manning seems like a good guy but skills-wise it was obvious he didn't meet NHL dman standards. Good luck to him - honestly - going forward.

It's common place around here for people to blame others for one's blunders....

ie)
Chiarelli is not to be blamed for the Reinhart deal, that was the OBC or Bob Green specifically.
Chiarelli is solely to blame for Manning/Petrovic
The OBC is to blame for Koskinen

etc.... People around here spin things to make whichever case they are making look better. Get used to it.

See now that quote is from a coach who isn't going to say the opposite and the key word in his quote is "trying to help". That's kind of an underhanded compliment to me.

Chiarelli, ultimately was the one who signed off on the trades, not the AGM and as has been beaten to death, by his own admittance was chasing Manning for over a year.

Gretzky trading Spooner and trying to trade Manning (now putting him on waivers) is a sign to me he wasn't on board with these moves and in no business operation would an AGM's words or wishes supercede the GM. As I said to the other poster earlier today, we won't ever know what other returns were on the table. Maybe Petrovic was the guy Gretzky suggested they pursue. Pretty suspicious how two of Chiarelli's guys are gone and Petrovic is still around (R/S, UFA-I know).

We can discuss until we're blue in the face over who we think was on board with trading who for whatever return and in the end no one knows except the people employed with the Oilers executive.

I'd love a Q & A with Chiarelli and Nicholson about the rationale of these deals
why trade for Spooner?
why trade for Petrovic?
why trade for Manning
why sign Koskinen after 27 games?
Bob, why did you allow these desperation trades to occur knowing full well Chia was on thin ice??

dumbest organization in sports

No worries, the Edmonton press is lining these questions up as I type...

It's possible Petrovic was Gretzky's suggestion and Manning was Chiarelli's, but the ask for two D was from a desperate Chia because he had been given word that Klefbom and Russell were out for longer than the Oilers thought.

Chia had to save his job. The rationale isn't terribly complicated, you guys who think this is some kind of master conspiracy are way overthinking things.

Because he’s like the 13th best dman on the team, and his contract makes it harder to address the issues with the wingers. How is it not a good thing? Not having to pay to get rid of Manning would be a miracle

Yes, the Chia/OBC trade to get him was a travesty, but that has already occurred and is a sunk cost. Getting rid of Manning's cap hit for next year would be *fantastic* news.

After sending Brisebois down the Canucks are at 22 players and 6 defensemen.
