Brad Ross for Jimmy Hayes trade. Why would anyone ever make this deal?

It's actually not captain hindsight at all. Burke came in and wanted to put a mini stamp on the team by clearing out random bodies he had no idea about. Paradis for Tlusty after a few months on the job, Brad Ross for Hayes, etc. He wasn't too familiar with the system but also needed to make a move during the 2010 draft when we had given up the Seguin pick.

I agree. Burke was hellbent on injecting the system with truculence, regardless of how many skilled players with nice potential where on the board. Hayes was and still is just a big softie and he probably saw Ross live a couple times in the WHL stirring the pot and scoring goals, which surely made him all antsy in the pantsy.

Ryan, Devane, Ross, Carrick, Biggs, Nilsson, Broll, Rupert....most of these guys were bad picks at their draft position, but Burke set out to create a tough identity for the future of the organization, which was arguably much needed at the time. The only problem today is the prospect pool is full of 3rd and 4th line grinders with little to no top end skill.

There were also reports at the time that he wasn't going to sign here and didn't want to be with the team.

I'm not going to find the link, but there were reports that he he wanted to be with his brother. Also, similar situation to Bill Sweatt that someone else brought up.

Because it was 4 years ago; Hayes was 20 and Ross was 18...no one knew that this is how they would each develop. Hayes was fresh off a mediocre freshman season at BC and a pretty good sophomore season. Ross was a PPG player in his 2nd WHL season and the only player in the CHL to put up 25+ goals and 200+ PIMs. At the time it seemed like a decent trade.

So, yeah, definitely a "hindsight's 20-20" trade. I'm not losing too much sleep on it though; he's a 24 year-old putting up 10 points in 37 games playing 10:04 TOI/G on a terrible Florida team. I can't imagine he'd be an impact roster player for the Leafs any time soon.

this is one of those threads that will come up on HF when the leafs are sitting 11 games over 500, not too much to complain about these days

Who the **** cares if detroit wanted to take biggs. Doesn't change the fact we wasted 2 picks for him.

Detroit has the most overrated scouting staff in the league. Prove me wrong within the last 10 years

He both contributed and cleared space on the line of

Ross-Johansen-Niederieter

Ross might be another Rob Pearson, except he continued to excel, the next season without his
former linemates.

Tomas Tatar (60th overall in 2009) and Gustav Nyquist (121st overall in 2008) look like mighty fine picks outside of the first round

2005:
Kindl - 1st Round - 19th Overall
Abdelkader - 2nd Round - 42nd Overall
Helm - 5th Round - 132nd Overall

2006:
Emmerton - 2nd Round - 41st Overall
Matthais - 2nd Round - 47th Overall

2007:
Smith - 1st Round - 27th Overall
Andersson - 3rd Round - 88th Overall

2008:

2009:
Tatar - 2nd Round - 60th Overall

2010:
Sheahan - 1st Round - 21st Overall
Jarnkrok - 2nd Round - 51st Overall
Pulkkinen - 4th Round - 111th Overall
Mrazek - 5th Round - 141st Overall

2011:
Jurco - 2nd Round - 35th Overall
Ouellet - 2nd Round - 48th Overall
Sproul - 2nd Round - 55th Overall

2013:
Mantha - 1st Round - 20th Overall

Sure their not the drafting powerhouses they used to be when they were drafting guys like Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kronwall, Howard, Holmstrom, Hudler, Filppula, Fleischmann, Ericsson, Osgood, Knuble, Primeau, Kozlov, Lidstrom, Fedorov, Drake, Konstantinov, etc. in the late-80's through early-00's, but for a team that hasn't picked higher than 19th Overall in 23 years, I'd say they've done an impressive job keeping their prospect cupboard stocked.

I dunno it's just a list of guys. Jurco and Tatar have some shine on them right now, but I'm not convinced they are stud players in waiting. We shall see.

Their drafting of guys like Dats, Zets, and Lidstrom was nothing more than luck. Some names of guys they took in those drafts BEFORE calling those names: Bob Boughner, Brent Hobday, Jari Tolsa. You would think you would make sure to not risk losing Lidstrom for Bob Boughner, but that's what the geniuses in Detroit did. Detroit scouting is ridiculously overrated.

Groan.... did you have to remind us? Biggs,Devanne all taken early because of Burkes desire for grit and a splash/ leaving his mark. I like to quietly forget about this trade and all the other 2nd rounders we threw away.

Ross could easily have been had in the 3rd ,Biggs in the 2nd and Devane as late as 4th or 5th round. We are really paying for this strategy now as we only have Dmen coming through the system now.

Having so many Dmen coming through was a part of Burke's strategy everyone likes to ignore because it's never brought up as much as other statments he made here.

His statement was I believe something like "I like to have lots of D because you can always move 1 to fill a need" and this was after the summer he signed Beauchemin

This can be summed up with my favourite explaination.

"If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle!"

If if if.....

Hindsight is 20/20. It's more Steen and Coliacavo for Stempniak that STILL boggles my mind.

I don't see what's impressive about that. Not an impact player among them and just a couple maybe's.

Dumb trade. Big man, great skater, doesnt play all that tough but is comparable to an Alex Ponikoravsky. Brad Ross is a terrible skater, no edge as advertised as he plays afraid in the AHL, and has a bad attidude in terms of commitment to making the NHL with his training discipline. Apparently he wants to be a golfer. Why did we make this trade
