-Gio, while still solid, starts to show his age.
-Hanifin/Hamonic don’t mesh and struggle in the first half. Hamonic + 2019 1st traded to the Jets for Trouba. Hanifin/Trouba have instant chemistry and more or less take over the top pairing by the end of the season.
-Valimaki takes Kulak’s spot in camp, but comes in a la Jankowski last year.
-Lindholm is a solid upgrade on Ferland but is still more or less a complementary piece to Gaudreau/Monahan, who are lights out this year.
-Tkachuk does well but the 2nd line never seems to mesh. The slight upgrade offensively doesn’t make up for the hit they take defensively. Fans sour on the Neal signing by the end of the year.
-Czarnik finds a home on the 3rd line and has a calming effect on Bennett/Jankowski. They have moderate success, all 3 pushing towards 35 points, with very limited PP time.
-The 4th line is widely regarded as one of the best in the league. Frolik-Ryan-Lazar put up decent numbers offensively and shut down top lines.
-Smith faulters but Flames still squeak into the playoffs, only to go out early, with a whimper.
