I can turn this into a Star Trek thread easily and I love those characters but Kirk had no reason to take command of the Enterprise in Wrath of Khan. Spock ran a tight ship and finally understood and embraced his human side, plus he stays in command they raise their shields and Reliant can't do anything to them. Chekhov also should have been a little more careful in the Ceti Alpha Sector, and Starfleet got a little lazy with decommissioning the heavily damaged Enterprise in Search For Spock.
