It's trying to be smarter not singing a guy you can know is seeking to be a top 10 paid guard not really top 10 worthy? Also undersized as was a notable issue here.Just noticed that Poles didn't even attempt to resign James Daniels, as mentioned in the latest Suntimes article about the Bears' final roster cuts. Daniels was considered "one of the most athletic offensive linemen coming into the league... Combine his terrific movement skills with long arms, and you have a player who projected very well at the next level." which he lived up to, in his four years with the Bears, per Steelers OG James Daniels considered among most underrated free agent signings
How does that jive with the alleged intention of Poles trying to remake the O-line "lighter" and "quicker" in the same Suntimes article? Was it just the 8.8 mil/yr (for 3 years) price tag that it took Pitt to sign the 24-yr old Daniels, making him the 7th highest paid at his position, or do we have another case of a GM trying to show he's "smarter" than his peers or at least predecessor (Pace), just like his predecessor often did with his GM moves? That, coupled with the dramas over the handling of Tevan Jenkins and the dealings with Roquan Smith, makes me think it doesn't so well for Poles as a GM.
- Ruggs was developing nicely as a #1 WR before he threw his life and career away getting behind wheel and taking an innocent life
- Jacobs has been good but injury prone and new regime not committing long-term to him as holdover of previous regime is not slight against Jacobs. Infact, he has chance to make them regret it this coming year and could parlay that into good $ with FA on horizon
- Abram is starting safety and progressing nicely again new regime that didn't draft him. Like Jacobs he will have chance to parlay a strong year into nice FA deal
There were certainly misses but these 3 were not misses and Gruden/Mayock couldn't foresee Ruggs throwing away his life and career by getting behind wheel and taking life
Should be noted while other GMs can't find any quality talent beyond round 1 Mayock/Gruden drafted several good players beyond 1st round during Raider tenure
In the end Gruden/Mayock had Raiders going in right direction and certainly a better team than the dumpster fire they inherited
Agreed. I like the Raiders, but Gruden is barely .500 for his career (117-112), he never got them in the playoffs, and he and Mayock did a horrible job drafting as you can see in the posts above. 17th pick Leatherwood lasted 1 year. That’s a long way to say they f***ed up really badly
Wasn't whitehair worse at center?I'm going to say it now, iOL should be Leatherwood-Whitehair-Jenkins.
