Forget about this aspect of it. Playing a goalie 70+ games in a season is insane. Marty in is prime was just a freak in this regard and it is one of the things that made him an all time great. Trying it with another goalie is absurd.

100% agree. Something I always felt Marty never got enough credit for...The guy was the definition of Work horse.

Ya that would be the most realistic option :) I would love to see Marty back and playing in 15-20 games. It would be far better than useless Clemmer. Maybe it's too much on Cory?

Clemmensen will start when called upon to do so - he looked awful in those relief appearances because he was coming in cold against hot teams with a garbage NJD in front of him who were already deflated and ready to go home.

Eight goalies slotted in between 67-73 starts in 2011-12. The shortened schedule in '13 and the Olympic-compressed schedule last year made that impossible but I don't see why it can't happen in a normal year.

Thing is we have something like 17 back-to-backs this year. I don't know what number they have in mind for Cory and this schedule hasn't been challenging for a goalie workwise yet (though it's about to be) but I do think 70+ would really be pushing the envelope given the 17 back-to-backs and the fact Cory simply hasn't gone anywhere near that number yet. 65-67 would probably be the upper limit of what Cory should get this year.

As far as the backup starts...it should be about Kinkaid 15, Clemmensen 0 but I still think Clemmensen gets the first shot to go splat though his bad relief appearances and Kinkaid's good play could change that script as soon as next week.

Clemmensen being put on waivers should signal that Kinkaid will get the first chance to start as Schneider’s backup, though in typical Lou fashion he’s simply saying that this move is to get Clemmensen some playing time in the AHL.

Albany doesn’t play again until Wednesday afternoon, while Thursday would make the most logical sense for NJ to start a backup (Western Conference team, save Schneider for Detroit Friday night)…can’t imagine Clemmensen would start both games back-to-back, so good sign for Kinkaid to get the start.

Talking about backups just makes me think again about how ill conceived the notion was of playing Schneid's 70 games.

I don't think it is the workload at all with Schneids. He looked better in the second game of the back to back and has played his best recently.

He had a uneven, at times shakey start to the season. The team has given him some unexpected goal support in some, and he stole a couple along the way (Tampa is an early example).

I think he is embracing the workload, is young and supposedly came into camp in best shape of his career.

I don't worry about fatigue, at all, considering what fatty did for two decades to define our franchise success.

But I think starting Scott Clemmensen in an NHL game is surefire surrendering of two points.

He is that terri-bad.

And since we missed the playoffs last season by 5 points and seem to be a middle of the pack team (despite being 1 point out of 1st place now, hilariously)...giving away any points seems suicidally stupid.

If Clemmer gets anything more than one chance to steal a game, I would riot.

And everyone here knows how supportive I am of the team, and am not at all a complainer.

But it would cripple my brain if Clemmer lost a start and wasn't immediately replaced by Kinky Boots.

And I would prefer not to tank even that game and bring up Kinky in advance of these back to backs, and let Clemmer ride buses the rest of the year collecting his gift of 500K.

I think Clemmer would rather be in Albany at this point. His family is based in Saratoga and he said more or less as well.

And perhaps this has been the plan all along, and despite the false narrative this team is not run by smart hockey minds, that somehow Lou and Pete wouldn't notice the difference of where these two goalies are in their career arc.

As at least we can all agree, it made no sense for Kinky to wear a ball cap for a month to see 37 minutes of game action, as he has lead Albany to our best AHL start ever and surely is full of confidence, his game in a good place.

Except for the fact that he earn 3x the salary in the NHL.

Still, he has to be estactic to have signed this contract with the Devils. He's not an NHL caliber goalie and wouldn't have gotten a contract elsewhere and he makes a good amount of money on his AHL deal and gets to be close to his family.

As someone else said this was planned as hell.

I know some guessed this was the plan. Let kinky get playing time during a light October but I know some didn't (I honestly did think Clemmer was getting a start)

Either way right move. Kinky can win us gamrs.

He alluded to it in an interview. So, he settles in Albany and takes some kind of job with the team long term.

Agree with everything you said except...

Can you please not use the insult that Avery used to describe Marty?

Even in jest, it's annoying and reminds me of that loser never-will-be imposter-of-a-hockey-player.

Indeed, this was a perfectly executed strategy by the higher ups. Get Kinky some great playing time and build his confidence up so when it comes time (This month) he would be perfectly willing and capable as starting a few games to relieve Cory of a crazy schedule. I have to say though, Clemm has taken the situation in stride and I have nothing but respect for the man. He isn't making a big fuss about it and I'm sure we haven't seen the last of him this year. I wish him the best of luck but MOVE ON OVER! Kinky is in town!!

Kinkaid will come up and dominate causing another goalie controversy involving Schneider :sarcasm:

Oh god! This place is really gonna go crazy if Cory has a couple bad games again and Keith puts together a couple good ones.

I honestly think Clemmer knew exactly what the deal was the moment he signed the two way deal.

So good on him for being cool and ok with it all (money or not this isn't the easiest thing to swallow as a professional).

I think this plan went into effect during camp. Once they saw Kink look solid and "win" the job it was just a matter of when would they choose to sit Cory and make this move.

It would go crazy if Lou wasn't being transparent and Clemmensen was 'actually' going down just to play a game before he came back up and got a shot in Detroit on Friday.

It's going to happen - Cory hasn't just 'had bad games' - he's had about 2 good games where he didn't have a meltdown moment at some point.

You are just seeing what it is like to have a #1 goalie night in and night out who can't play the puck, gives up big rebounds, the occasional bad angle goal and occasionally crumbles mentally.

He's a fantastic, athletic goaltender - one of the best in the league - and most nights he is going to be the best player on the ice - but the expectations set by the Cory camp's rose-colored glasses are just going to crash back to earth on us.

All of the things we are talking about with Cory happened last year too - some people just choose to forget about the 'bad games'.

It's really easy for Kinkaid or any 1/2-way decent backup to come in and win 7 of his 10 selected starts - while Cory stands on his head for 20 of 60, but *is like every other goaltender for the other 40*.

It's a tough gig being a goalie.

We will have to get used to the fact that Schneids isn't Marty and plays the puck poorly. And has his own unique mental breakdowns.

He is mortal, fallible and going to lose some games, sometimes by his own fault.

But he will also steal games, keep us in games where we have no business being in the game and generally give us rock solid work from a technical standpoint (aside from puck handling).

There will be bad with good, but among the available options he shouldn't have even been available, much less locked in here for 8 years.

So I'm down with Schneids for the long haul, warts and all.

Amen to that. I have confidence he'll be a great goalie for us. I just have equal confidence that these boards will turn on him when he turns out to be 'just' an excellent goalie filling some big shoes - especially if Kinky ends up winning games and Cory butchers a few. I don't think people realize what great goalie play this team got from both goalies last year.
