Matthews' probably gets an 'A' once Marleau is no longer on the team as well.

Rielly is known for being generally well-liked and connected with everyone in the dressing room (also one of the longer tenured Leafs at this point), and Marleau/Tavares' resumes speak for themselves.

I would not be surprised if Matthews gets to wear an A this season if god for bid Tavares, Marleau or Rielly can not play due to an injury, just like Marleau did last season when Bozak or Komarov were not playing because of injury or when Komarov was being a healthy scratch.

Smart move. There is no reason to give Matthews a letter and more leverage before he signs an 8 year deal.

Once he's signed long term, I am sure he will be the captain of this team but at the moment, we don't need to give him more ammo than he already has.
