And she's done it!

What a week for the 17 year old!

Another Canadian teenager on the big stage.
She did it in style, too, showing a lot of spirit, especially in the second set where if she really needed a clutch point she usually won it. Those groundies and her first serve give her major skills to work with as she matures.

Fernandez gets American Lauren Davis in the first round. Currently ranked 62nd, so not a bad draw. If she gets by there, she'll likely have Svitolina in the second, so it gets a lot tougher.

Rublev's six month hot streak continues with another championship, this time in Auckland. He's had an amazing run, but he must be getting tired. Good bet he might be upset in the first three rounds, I should think.

Interesting comments by Shapovalov

Good on Denis to put this out there. Even if it just pushes tournament organizers to be a bit more cautious.
This is really good to see. I hope he sticks to his guns. If money didn't rule the world, this tournament would have been postponed already.

Yeah, this tournament starts tonight. I like tennis so I'll watch but why they didn't postpone this this year is beyond me. I know money's important but so too is a country burning and tennis should be one of the last things happening there right now.

Denis plays an erratic first game and is broken. He has hit a few low percentage shots and a few shanks.

Set down. I fear Denis doesn't need much to get him off his game tonight.

Denis is in trouble. Second set is better but not great.

BIG sigh of relief as Fucsovics chokes in the breaker.

This is as well as I've seen Fucsovics play although I won't claim to have watched a pile of his matches. Huge 2nd set breaker for Denis.

Denis got a little more into it in the second set. The best thing he has going for him in this match is Fucsovic and his propensity to get jitters.

Denis is lost. Holy crap, that set was an epic disaster.

What an embarrassing performance in that third set.

Disaster of a 3rd set but early break in the 4th.

Albot withdraws and Raonic gets a LL.
Also the sleeve is back!!

Milos took the first and is up 1-0 and a break. The wind is strong on his court.

Roger over Johnson 6-3, 3-love at the moment and looking absolutely great.

Easy, peasy 3, 2 and 2. Johnson probably wonders why he bothered to show up.

Londero, as usual making life miserable for a higher seed, takes the first set off Dimitrov 6-4.

Easy time for Grigor the rest of the way, though.

Gauff blows two set points on Venus's serve, gets broken serving for the set at 5-4, and blows a 5-2 lead in the breaker, but wins anyway. Poor Venus must have slapped her forward when she saw the draw having lost to Gauff in the first round at Wimbledon last year, but her experience could still give her some cause for hope the rest of the match.

Gauff won the second set 6-3. Didn't see it, but she obviously is a kid that can rise to the occasion.
