Matthews might be better right now. Even if he isn't, I think that he'll be better over the next 3 years.
Tavares. Matthews will likely surpass him, in peak and career (maybe) - but it might take a couple more years to reach that level.

IF.....and that's a big if.....the Leafs get Tavares, just imagine how much better he can be with a talent like Mitch Marner on his wing. We could easily see him surpassing 40 goals/90 points with magic Mitch. Gonna be a lot of fun, if it goes down like that.
Magic Mitch gonna walk out with a hell of a pay day out of that, too.
How do they manage to keep all that talent and still address holes at D?

By moving other guys out when needed. It's not that hard. Hopefully they win some Cups soon, and then in a few years Marleau is off the books.....they can trade Gardiner......Zaitsev........
They still have a damn good farm system to replace those guys. They'll be fine.

Tavares. 2x Hart Finalist and has had strong playoff seasons. Matthews has been underwhelming in post season and hasn't played a full season yet.
He is also coming off a better season.
Tavares is underrated because he is on the Islanders.

That is true unless JT signs with Leafs... Then JT = Crosby and the best C in the world and Matthews is right behind him.
If JT goes to SJ then he is just another 1C on the decline.
