I'll go with Sundin for now, although Auston could pass him soon.

They're both pretty much the same player, IMO, but Mats carried his team on his back more than Auston does. As I said, that could change soon.

Aside from compiling points, Mats didn't really do much that was noteworthy, either in terms of leading his team far in the playoffs or competing for individual awards.

If Matthews follows Mats' trajectory I have to think that Toronto fans would regard his career as a disappointment.

So it's Matthews pretty easily IMO.

Yeah I don't really understand the above comments about "carrying the team on his back". When he was Matthews age he hadn't done any such thing, and besides hockey is the biggest team sport there is anyhow. Matthews now is a flat out better player than Sundin ever was, and judging their careers at similar ages Matthews is hands down the better player, and that's no disrespect to Sundin who was elite or close to it for well over a decade.

Sundin's peak was putting up a finish of 2nd in goals (3 way tie, and 11 back from the leader) and 4th in points.

Matthews currently is 1st in goals and 4th in points. Even if you think that comparability is off because of the intradivisional play, Matthews still would have likely won the rocket in a normal 82gp season, and top-5 in points would have been likely anyways. Given that Matthews also was 3rd in goals and 9th in points last year, he has a better 2 straight years than Sundin has (since the year before and after Sundins 01/02 were both not even close to his 01/02).

I say Matthews

Matthews. He's got a strong case as the top goal scorer in hockey, plus he's got a strong case for being a top 5 center in hockey. I don't think Sundin ever had a case for either of those things.

So what? What does that matter? One is a better goal scorer and the other got more points. But in style and output......VERY similar.

Anyone could get 100 points in 1992/1993.

In fact, 21 players did.

Comparing raw totals of two players in different eras is pointless.

Who said anything about 100 points? Is there something wrong with you?

The two are super consistent, and large, strong guys with soft hands. And they both score goals like crazy. It couldn't be more obvious, how similar they are.
