Doughty and Niedermayer are probably both low-end #1s at even strength or at least close to it. Both are kind of even strength specialists. But when you have Gretzky, not having a top PP QB is kind of easier to stomach.

Well deserved win, @Dreakmur. Your team wasn't perfect (you really could have used another C with good defense), but you were still my (slight) favorite to win this draft. I was hoping to be the one to lose to you in the finals, but @BraveCanadian was a deserving runner up for sure.

Hope you stick around the ATD, BC. Your presence definitely makes this thing better.

I think the other thing is if you ever want to make a position a "Strength", you're necessarily going to have some deficiencies in your lineup. I liked what he constructed, although I was personally more partial to @ImporterExporter build because I liked the idea of having all of those great D.

Still - there were some non-traditional builds that made deep runs this year, which I think is nothing but a good thing.

Yeah, with so many good GMs, it's pretty much impossible to be strong in every position. You can either have some strengths and weaknesses or you can have no real weaknesses and no real strengths.

I liked IE's team too. Unique build, and got some great value in Malone and Bucyk.

I enjoyed watching @ImporterExporter's team come together so well with such an outside the box idea, but I do think it was taken one step too far. IMO the one fatal mistake (if you consider making it all the way to the Conference Finals fatal) was drafting Laperriere as the 4th Dman. Just taking an average #4 would've still guaranteed him the best top 4 in the draft by a wide margin, and there were some strong centers still available at that time (most notably Norm Ullman) who would've been a really nice 1-2 punch with Malone.

A big Kudos to him though. Also, the winning Gretzky-Plante combo on @Dreakmur's team reminded of IE's Gretzky-Roy combo 2-3 years ago.

I hope we keep seeing more of these successful new/unique team builds going forward. I tried one a bit myself drafting 2 centers with my 2nd and 3rd round picks, and although I didn't have playoff success, it was a lot of fun trying something new, and I was happy with the team I built.

Lol.

Curry was drafted before you picked Kasper and Sutter.

I can't believe it worked! Big pay off to a long-laid plan.

In mid May, thought to myself "what if we have a re-draft in June.... a draft we've never tried before.... and what if VI participates... and what if VI takes Floyd Curry... well damn, I better lay some early Floyd Curry hate, just in case!"
