Remember when TDMM mentioned what made Ed Sandford worse than Clark Gillies?

Well here is a guy that is getting an absolutely deserved bump as he shouldn't even be available this late IMO and his career is very similar to Gillies who went 332 picks ago. He's a guy that you want on a winning roster. Does all the little things that go unnoticed by the average fan. Big time gamer for Pittsburgh for a long time. You can really put his career next to a lot of the secondary pieces in the previous eras that get drafted well before this point.

Pittsburgh is pleased to introduce to the ATD:

Chris Kunitz, LW

dbd83de41eb0dc8d0ca67717708c4a44.jpg

Consider:

Key secondary/complimentary member of 4 SC winners (3 in Pittsburgh 1 in Anaheim).

Scored 37 points over 68 games on the 3 SC runs with Pittsburgh which included 2 OT game winners, most notably one of the greatest goals ever scored in Pittsburgh history that pushed the Penguins into the Cup finals in 2017 (see video below). Double OT, game 7, ECF.

Was a 1st team AS in 2012-13.

Better ES scoring than Gillies (see chart below) which when speaking about bottom 6 F's means quite a bit. His ES VsX is as good or better than many bottom 6'ers already drafted.

Has has one of the best R-ON - ROFF splits in history (see chart below). He had elite possession metrics throughout the overwhelming majority of his career.

Both Gillies and this guy benefited from playing with elite talent at ES (Gillies with Trottier/Bossy a good amount and CK played with Crosby at ES for a long time) but their style makes them really nice fits as bottom 6 do it all types.

Kunitz was a high end fore checker for a long time. Always right around the above average defensively mark, at least in Pittsburgh where most of his career was played.

Nice overview of Kunitz as a player and his contributions:
Chris Kunitz: The Penguins' Unassuming Hitmaker | Pittsburgh Magazine

"Kunitz topped out at an elite-level 35 goals in 2013-14. He had matching seasons of 17 goals and 40 points the past two seasons, still very respectable. His biggest assets, though, are his savvy at getting the puck to his higher-end linemates, being willing to play in the rough-and-tumble area in front of the opponent’s net and his physical play.

Kunitz is 6 feet, 195 pounds, solid but not usually the biggest body on the ice. Yet last season he dished out 264 hits, more than 100 better than any of his teammates. He half-jokes that “probably when I get too slow to get over there and hit somebody is when my hit total will come down,” but the Penguins don’t take Kunitz for granted."

“He plays a game that’s not easy to play,” general manager Jim Rutherford says. “You have to have a certain makeup to do that. He can make those adjustments to play with those players.”

OK I'm going to make up some picks for the Corpus Christi Ice Rays.

The Ice Rays have a top 6 forward group with scoring punch and toughness, so I'll pick a couple of defensive forwards who can kill penalties and have enough skill and ability that they won't get smoked at even strength.

With pick 536, Hec Kilrea, LW. Kilrea had a 15 year career in the NHL, very long for the 20s and 30s, playing primarily as a checker and penalty killer. Kilrea was one of the fastest players in the league at the time and won several fastest skater competitions. When given more offensive opportunity, he scored 36 goals (5th in the league) and 58 points (5th) in the 1929-30 season, leading the Canadian division in points scored.

Kilrea received some all star votes in the manager-voted teams of the late 20s.
1926-27: “Also receiving votes” at wing along with Cy Denneny, behind W. Cook, Hay, Joliat, Morenz,
Smith, and Irvin.
1927-28: Kilrea was 9th in the league in goals scored and received a combined 3 first place votes and 2 second place votes on both wings from the 10 NHL managers in the unofficial all-star voting for that season, third best among wingers behind Cook and Hay. He didn't make the first team or second team because of vote splitting between positions, but had a better voting record than the second teamers Joliat and Oliver.
1928-29: Kilrea was the 2nd team all star LW
1929-30: Kilrea was the 1st team all star LW

Kilrea played on 3 championship teams, the 1927 Ottawa Senators and the 1936 and 1937 Detroit Red Wings.

With pick 585, Sean Couturier, C.

Couturier has been one of the top defensive centres and penalty killing forwards of the past decade. He announced his entry as a significant defensive player in the 2012 playoffs at age 19 when he was widely praised for his matchup success on Evgeni Malkin. He has killed penalties in a significant role since his rookie season, and has a 46% role on his team's PK in his 647 career cames. He leads all forwards in combined SH ice time in his 9 seasons in the league.

Couturier has developed his offensive game in the last 3 seasons when given more opportunity, and is 10th in even strength points for the last 3 seasons combined. As often happens, he started to get Selke consideration as soon as he started scoring, and has a 2nd and a 6th place finish in Selke voting from 2017-18 and 2018-19. Couturier finished 1st in the PHWA's first half awards poll for the Selke trophy in the incomplete (?) 2019-20 season. He also finished 1st in a poll of The Athletic writers (many of whom are PHWA writers) for the Selke trophy in late March.

Sean Couturier is our Selke Trophy pick. Evaluating his case...

In January, (Couturier) won the Professional Hockey Writers Association's Selke Midseason's Selke midseason poll over yearly contenders Patrice Bergeron and Ryan O'Reilly, and today, in a survey of 41 The Athletic writers on the NHL awards, he again came out on top. Since the PHWA votes for the Selke Trophy and writers from the Athletic make up the single largest PHWA voting block, Couturier is the clear favourite for the award.

...

As a Flyers writer, I unsurprisingly lean toward Couturier. His ability to revitalize struggling teammates the second they’re placed on his line is stunning to watch in real time; it’s earned him the nickname “Dr. Coots” from head coach Alain Vigneault. In addition, Couturier found a way to elevate his game every time he matched up against a star this season, and public metrics hint that wasn’t mere perception — per Puck IQ’s Quality of Competition stat, Couturier drove play better against “Elite” competition (58.00 percent Corsi For) than normal opponents, and helped the Flyers to a massive 19-6 goal advantage versus elites. That lines up with my view of his work on a nightly basis.

I'm going to take Dunc Munro to finish off my defense corps.

I was so ready to take Munro as my #6...gonna have to look again. Short career due to his heart troubles but I love the leadership and the fact that the coaches voted him a first team all star in 1926-27.

Couturier is a great make up pick now. Strong Selke record for this point in the draft and as you mentioned started to emerge offensively as well.

The Corpus Christi Ice Rays, with pick 616, round out their top 6 defenders with Brian Engblom, D.

Engblom was a strong defensive defenceman from the 80s, with a nice little peak where he played for Canada in the 1981 Canada Cup and was voted a second team all-star for 1981-82.

Engblom played the right side when paired with Rod Langway in Montreal, and when paired with Scott Stevens in Washington.

You don't see it in his hockey card stats but Engblom was a big minute defender on good teams for his seven year prime (1979-80 to 1985-86). He was among the few defencemen on above-average teams to be on ice for at least 40% of his team's even-strength goals for and against, and a quick-and-dirty estimation shows him playing 24-25 minutes per game, with very little PP time.

Damn you, @ImporterExporter , Kunitz was my upcoming pick

I debated taking him on the last turn but gambled that he'd fall back to this spot.

He's a guy that's played a lot in every spot (1-4) over his career. Plays a hard game, far more often than not. Always had a great motor, likely stemming from him being undrafted. And I like that in 4th line guys. They may have played higher in the lineup at one point but they play with a grinder, get it done at all cost mentality. He'll check all day long, chip in plenty of offense for a 4th line W and he's always had a knack for coming up aces in big spots. Being as I saw a large portion of his career I used to always say "what if you gave Kunitz's brains to Kris Letang. Swamp them out."? Tanger would have won a few Norris'. But Kunitz's lines always had great possession metrics and CK was a beast in the corners. Just a fantastic glue guy in the modern game. Played both special teams as well. Sneaky good on the PP.

I was a little surprised he didn't get picked up last year once you had a 4th Cup (which he was very instrumental in winning) to finish out his career. But then again I participated last year and only semi considered him very late.

With pick 665 the Corpus Christi Ice Rays take Jason Pominville, RW.

Pominville has had a very solid NHL career. He's 28th in goals scored (293), 31st in points scored (727) and 33rd in assists (434) since the start of the 2005-06 season. Among wingers he's 16th in goals scored, 12th in points scored and 8th in assists over that time period. More of a playmaking winger than a scorer but still finished second in even-strength goals for the 2006-07 season. Offensively creative and defensively responsible, durable (8 seasons where he played all 82 games), and a clean player, with only 199 PIM in 1060 games.

Pominville can also fill in on special teams if needed, including the point of the power play, with a 51% career PP% and a 21% career SH%.

Engblom was on my radar for both my teams; I might have picked him earlier if he were a RD.

I don't approve of making the pick without a picture of a bad mullet, however.
