There's also the option that if Carolina DOES get him (Habs not matching), and he does work out, it's also possible that he agrees to an extension, at a lower number then his QO would be (it's not unheard of)
I was also reading that he can be qualified at 85% of the 6.1M if they file for Club Elected Arbitration.

I heard an interview with Don Waddell on the radio the other day, and he explained that the reason they did not want to commit to Nedelkjovic was really more about not wanting to bank on youth in the crease at this point in their contention window. Whether that is the right decision or not is up in the air, but that decision in particular was not apparently about money.

I think this is a good move for Carolina regardless of how it plays out. A (presumably low) first and a third is a very low price to take a shot at Kotkaniemi for 1 or 2 years. The one-year deal does not anchor them in any way going forward.

There is no result of this that is really negative for Carolina. Even if Kotkaniemi turns out to be a complete bust, they can simply not qualify him, and probably not lose too much sleep over the picks. If he turns out to be good, but the QO is too pricey, they can probably trade him for an equal price. And if Montreal matches, they get to laugh even more about how much they have messed up the Habs' cap situation.
Plus Carolina can shelter KK to an extent. Aho is undisputed top guy and will get the attention of the other teams best players, and Staal will take the toughest defensive matchups.

Is it just me or does Logan Mailloux look like a real life Dilbert from the comic series?

On a different note, I'm getting confused AF by the Carolina offer sheet. So many posters on threads all over the place use KK as the initials which is throwing me off. I thought his initials were JK (first name Jesper) and KK was Kaapo Kaako from NYR? Heck I even see MTL fans use KK which is especially confusing.

Kotkaniemi.

but yes, that is a very random, no idea how and where that started
I think Kotkaniemi got shortened to Kotka, and the double hard consonant really stands out the more you say it. I think that is what led to the abbreviation.

The one that has been tripping me up lately is people referring to Evander Kane as 'EK', especially confusing because the guy I always think of as 'EK' (Erik Karlsson), is also on the sharks.

They used to use EK9 and EK65.... but at least it's the proper initials.

MTL using KK for coke can is just weird because it's not even his proper initials and the guy drafted just before him is referred to as KK due to his actual initials.

GMGM was a nice one, but nowadays people are using GM*initials* for almost every GM, and that's just stupid

People on main board are offended that I said Tanev makes team Canada over Dougie

The people on this site are so clueless it’s hilarious.

As they very well should be. Hamilton would be a #6 on the team. You got guys like Pietrangelo,Nurse,Markar,Theodore, Rielly, chychrun, Chabot, Ekblad, Morrissey then older guys like Doughty, Gio(doubt), Weber (doubt).

Tanev would not even be a consideration at this point. Granted he is a good player but there are plenty of guys that come before him.

Dougie Hamilton is the antithesis of a Hockey Canada player. No doubt in my mind the OBC has a distaste for him

To me hockey is situational. yeah there may be 6 better D on an NHL roster than Chris Tanev. But this is a best on best tournament. People really want to put Dougie Hamilton out against a line of Gaudreau-Matthews-Kane? I personally think that’s a recipe for disaster.

1) you don’t need slightly more offense generated at 5 on 5 in exchange for the extra risks you take with a player like Hamilton. Players like McDavid, Marner, Mackinnon, Crosby will generate the offence. There is too much talent on the other teams to bring guys who aren’t great defensively. That’s the way I look at.
2) There is only 1 PP. Tanev can play 5 on 5 and PK in which he’s as good as anyone. You already have Makar to run the PP.
3) Traditionaly Canada has favoured LD-RD combos as well as veteran defenceman (look at the teams they’ve brought best on best for decades).

I don’t think it’s a terrible idea or anything like that to have Tanev. If the team wanted have a guy that specialized in playing a shutdown role, you would be hard pressed to find a better defender. I don’t expect him to make the team though just because of how loaded TC is on the backend. Although if he did, I totally get why and I would expect he does a good job.

Hamilton should not be on the team.

The Right side is probably going to be

Makar
Pietrangelo
Ekblad

If either of Tanev or Hamilton make it they're not playing much.

Team Canada has always favored offense, there are plenty of competent dmen with good offensive skills. There is zero chance Tanev make it. That’s just the way it’s always been.

Hamilton? Not a sure thing but he got a shot

In 2014 they took Dan Hamhuis, Marc Edouard Vlasic and Jay Bouw. I know J-Bo and Hamhuis caught people by surprise

I think they might put a few elite shutdown guys like Tanev on the roster. Ekblad is good but he’s been hurt for a while so it’ll be interesting to see how he bounces back.

Theodore
Pietrangalo
Chabot
Makar
Ekblad
Doughty

Are all locks imo

I think Toews gets in giving them 2 pairings that have experience together.

I'm guessing the group is

Theodore - Pietrangalo
Toews - Makar
Chabot - Doughty
Ekblad

I see no chance Tanev makes it, I'm not even sure Hamilton does but I'd say he gets picked before Tanev

Both Hamhuis and JayB were more 2 way dmen than defensive specialists. Vlasic was but at the time he was much more highly regarded than Tanev is today.

Pelech should be there over Chabot or Theodore IMO.
