For a one and done season? That dead cap doesn’t come down significantly for 2 more seasons after this one. Are they a legit contender with Miller? They shed Dumba at the end of this season but their D takes a hit unless someone takes his minutes.

Wild fans would probably dispute that Fiala was their second-best forward.

And hey, they knew they needed to create cap flexibility. They went out and accomplished that, while getting some good futures in return. That's more than you can say for most clubs.

Yeah, I don't get these contracts.

The whole point to locking up a guy early to a huge deal like that is that you get a big AAV savings by giving the player the early security.

Instead, in a deal like this the player hits a home run and gets his security ... and what exactly is the benefit to the team? If Thompson goes 30-30-60 again next year, is he actually going to get more than 7x7? Almost certainly not. But there's a substantial chance he was a sh% driven one-year wonder who will go 25-25-50 next year and the team will end up holding the bag on a massive deal.
