Oilers have so much more talent than the Flames and yet Flames play a good blue-collar team game and get the win. Says a lot. That boring Monahan guy is gonna be real good.

well it the Oilers after all....even with their talent they can't beat a weak team is a problem. At least they kept to 2 goals or less for this game.

Gillis !@##!$!! The so-called changes he suggested last year were nothing but window dressing; had he put Kesler out at last year's draft Carolina, who were still shopping to compete, would have made the No. 5 overall available and the Canucks could have had Monahan. The Flames have their stud centre locked up for the next decade...

there were quite a few reports that 5th for Edler was a possibility.

Kesler would have brought back even more.

I just noticed that the Oilers new arena looks like the head of a golf club.
Go with what you are familiar with, eh.

The Maple Leafs have developed whole line of golf equipment over the years given the continuing early end to their seasons.

And the new nickname for Toronto? Not TO, not The Big Smoke...

All you need do is suck for an extended period of time, fail in a couple of complete rebuilds and then get lucky with your draft picks.

Except, unlike Edmonton, you need to have good complementary players as well for those draft picks aka Hossa, Sharp etc.

Then we'll have to start drafting well like they did.
The Hawks sucked for a long time and drafted poorly before and after they lucked out with Toews (#3) and Kane (#1) in back to back drafts.

Here are some of the first rounders who never panned out in Chicago:
DYLAN OLSEN
KYLE BEACH
JACK SKILLE
CAM BARKER
ANTON BABCHUK
MIKHAIL YAKUBOV
PAVEL VOROBIEV
TY JONES
DIMITRI NABOKOV
ERIC LECOMPTE

That team is stacked with talent.

Bickell Toews Kane

Sadd Sharp Versteeg

And they still have Shaw, Handzus

Good team, but I'm not sold on their center ice position. Sharp doesn't play C anymore (primarily LW) and I think Handzus is barely a top 9 player at this point. Can Regin fill in on the 2nd line? They don't seem to want to give Pirri the chance either.

They've had a number of late-rounders pan out too (Brouwer, Byfuglien, Hjalmarsson) who were part of the 2010 Cup team, getting steals in Sharp and Versteeg before they broke out and have done well the past couple of years with drafting guys who were on last year's winning team (Saad, Shaw, Kruger, Smith). Of course, they've had their share of busts along the way too but having that many picks to play with helps. If our output can be something similar to that it would be a nice start.

The point is for many years while they sucked they did not draft well.

Not hard to draft well when you're given top 3 picks. Should also be mentioned they had a complete swing and miss in Barker.
