Coming into this season, I had Giordano ranked fourth among defencemen over the last three seasons in overall impact, after ranking fifth the year before, and second in 2016. The only defencemen who have consistently ranked ahead of him over that time are Erik Karlsson, Drew Doughty, and P.K. Subban, all players that are six or seven years his junior, and the unquestionable elite tier of the league.
That Giordano is able to produce a similar impact on the game to those three defencemen in the back parts of their prime years, when he’s supposed to be in decline, is incredible.
Giordano’s standout area is his defensive play, with the Flames giving up about half as many passes to the slot-against when he’s on the ice than when he’s off. He’s a singular force to inhibit the shot quality of opponents in a similar way that we see with Patrice Bergeron.
However, defence isn’t what I want to highlight about his game right now. What’s stuck out to me lately is how much he’s stepped up his offensive game in the absence of Dougie Hamilton.
16. Last Saturday was an awesome flashback to the Battle of Alberta, but also what it was like to go into Calgary on a regular basis. For years, you knew that if you were going into that building, win or lose, you were going to get roughed up.
Tkachuk is going to get paid. He’s such an important player for them. Bennett’s contract is up too, and GM Brad Treliving’s refusal to trade the forward could go down as one of his best decisions. Sometimes, top selections (Bennett went fourth overall) get caught up in points and such. Bennett can have a long and excellent career as an edgy and productive all-around player. He just needs to embrace it.
17. Years ago, now-retired Mike Richards told a story about playing for Philadelphia against New Jersey. He said Sergei Brylin and Patrik Elias warned him that he was going to pay for it if he kept playing his way. I think some Oilers players tried the same tactic with Tkachuk. Remember the Kings going after him a few years ago? He drives people crazy.
Friedman18. Last season, David Rittich got an opportunity to be the No. 1 goalie in Calgary when Mike Smith was injured, and the mental side of it got to him. It happens. Even at 25, he was a rookie and it is new. One thing the Flames are working on with him is preparing the same way to start as he did when he was the backup. Always the same. Results are good so far, and it is clear his teammates believe in him.
Hopefully they caught it early so there is no nerve damage. The question after that is this a health issue like Dupuis or just a product of a former injury or blocked shot. Here is hoping for a good young man and great team mate.Blood clots are nasty ****, hope Stone recovers for him and family. Health first.
Our blueline depth just made Prout the next man up
Hee, hee, heeHot take: The real reason Sam hurt his arm is from doing pull-ups.

Good opportunity for Kylington. Hope he takes the ball and runs with it. Next game I'll really be watching his play. I'm hoping to be impressed. I haven't seen him play at all this year other than those preseason games and those type of games really don't count for much.Valimaki missed practice with a Lower body injury so it’s likely that Kylington plays tomorrow
