I don't want Frolik moved. He's a swiss army knife. If the Flames bring in a top 6 winger, I'd honestly look at Frolik to be the new 4C next year.

So, since it is pretty clear we are scouting Buffalo and likely having discussions with them, what Sabre player(s) would you like to see the Flames target and why?

For me:

1. Sam Reinhart - I think he would be a great fit long term on the right side.
2. Zemgus Girgensons - I think he would be a good long term bottom 6 option on the wing.
3. Jason Pominville - I've just always been a fan and he always seems to produce.

I don't see any fits considering the price (and there are more guys I want us to 100% stay away from ROR and Kane) but lets say something could be worked out I would like to add Sam Reinhart.

I haven't followed him much in the NHL but I remember back in the WJHC when everyone went crazy over Domi and Duclair you could see it was Reinhart and his IQ that made that line click. He was so good at making the little plays that created chances, killed opposition chances and allowed the other two to score goals. I don't think he has lost that and wonder if paired with the right guys how good he could be.

I am not sure where the fit would be because I think from an IQ perspective he could work with Gaudreau and Monahan but that is a pretty soft, defensively lacking line as Monahan is the only guy there that can play defense or battle for a puck.

Perhaps some posters can get their dream line of the Gaudreau-Bennett pair with Ferland or Jagr and then have Tkachuk-Monahan-Reinhart.

But as mentioned I think the cost for Reinhart will be way too much for us to pay.

I feel like Reinhart would fit better with Backlund and Frolik than JG and Mony, but who knows for certain?

I recall a few late rounders in Buffalo worth looking into. ie: Baptiste. Maybe Treliving is looking for a minor move?

I’d love Reinhart but I feel any deal for him would probably cost us Dougie, and I don’t see that happening.

How far off would Brodie for Scandella + Nylander be?
Nylander has struggled quite a bit but still had a lot of potential.
Maybe Rasmus + 4th for Nylander + 2nd

Alex Nylander certainly isn't as skilled as his brother.

Reinhart would be top of my Buffalo wishlist... he'd cost though. He's also certainly a player that Buffalo would likely want to keep. He's been worse than Bennett this year.

Another thing about Kane is that he's somewhat injury prone due to his style of play. Yeah the dude gives 110%, but if he's missing 10-20 games a year, well, I just hope those missed games don't include the playoffs. Not a good PP producer either.

Getting Reinhardt would be pretty cool

We’re not picking up Kane. When Bennett sucked, so bad, to start the season I’m sure there was a couple conversations. It’s the only thing that would make any sense. Since Bennett’s play has improved, I’m sure Kane isn’t an option but if they’re looking for a young RD, there could be other options.

I really hope we go for Simmonds even just a season and a half rental. What we need on PP and he's still an excellent player and overall better person.

Sabres fans on the main trade board are currently accepting R. Andersson straight across for Kane. I would definitely pull the trigger on this one. No offence to andersson at all but RD is a position of strength organizationally.

Is it though? For it to be a position of strength you also need depth and that begins and ends with Andersson.

1 Sabres fan and I still wouldn't touch that deal. Let that piece of shit rot in the sewer that is Buffalo like he deserves.

Thoughts on Fox vs Butcher. Could Fox walk up to the NHL and do the same? Or is there a facet of some sort that gives Butcher the edge over Fox?

Disappointment Sam wich... Bonus Mark for effort!

... I'll show myself out.

I'm still trying to figure out how to work Sam Reinharts name into Jannett Benkowski.

Butcher is a PP specialist #6D who wouldn't crack our roster. Fox will need to be (and thankfully, is) much more complete to become a Flame.

So, assuming we don't lose Fox, losing Andersson wouldn't be as big of a hit? (Though obviously keeping both would be better)

Trade Andersson for a horrible rental, watch Fox refuse to sign (like Hickey) and suddenly the vaunted RHS defensive depth disappears. Moreover, you're now forced to commit significant cap space to the right side because you've lost all your cheap depth. It's a bad idea, especially when all you're getting is Kane, who's not a creator or line driver or anything but Olli Jokinen 2.0 (i.e. a really bad fit).

Flames really don't have the assets to go after big name rentals without depleting their prospect pool, which they simply cannot afford to do because they've already traded basically all their picks. You go down that road and cup or no cup, you're essentially forced into a mini-rebuild/retool within a few years because you've allocated significant cap dollars to your core but you have no affordable depth to fill out the roster.

Nothing about this season suggests the Flames are an Evander Kane away from winning the cup.

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of what options are available in terms of long term goalie options, not rentals. Though I'm still not sure who actually is worth pursuing.

That being said, I am thinking we should just spend time to develop Rittich slowly. Rittich/Gilles or Rittich/Parsons might be looking like a shaking Hiller/Ramo coin flip in the next few seasons, but I think it's time we just stuck with guys and put them in situations conducive to development as an NHL calibre goalie. I also have a weird feeling that we shouldn't forget Mason MacDonald. I think that guy wakes up one day and just figures out how he wants to play, and whoever holds his rights will be rewarded.

Makes no sense to let any of them go. Worst case, McDonald keeps getting games in the ECHL.

Agreed. The more I look at this team, the more I think it makes more sense to stand pat and let everyone develop and fine tune their game over the next season or two and let the prospects swim to the top. The only true player that irks me is Smith due to his age, but nothing about his play and contract truly bugs me.
