because he has the tools to be a power forward but doesn't have the heart or drive.

So tell me, how does he score all the goals he does without any drive???? Do the other guys just lay down and let him do what he wants?

Because he's a man child. The guy doesn't even need to try because he's physically gifted. If he can put it all together, great we have a real player.

perhaps you're unaware, but hockey isnt played in only 1 zone....but im sure you're assessment of the lad far outweighs those who actually get paid to do it

Truthfully, I wanted DET to trade back again (was looking at MTL's 25th + 55th). I didnt have anyone singled out specifically to draft but from everything ive read and heard, Mantha is a 1 trick pony

I've read a lot about him, and the only time I heard the one-trick pony expression was this telecast. Almost every mock draft I saw had him going earlier. But, honestly if his "one trick" is scoring goals in bucketloads, that's fine by me... we don't really need another checker/energy guy/PK specialist.

Ah, the oldest assertion in youth hockey... He's bigger...

Mantha is going to be fine.

What I like the most about this pick, outside his size and scoring touch, is his supposedly high hockey IQ. Predicting the drive of someone is very difficult, if not very speculative. One of the most subjective parameters, and so, I won´t take it for granted.

Agreed. Nobody else like him in the system. Worth a shot!

Yep, that's the key--you can't have a whole team of Frazen's and Mantha's, but you still need them.

Considering where they picked, the Wings did great imo... but we won't know for sure for a few year.

I like the selection for the Wings. It was known that the Wings wanted a sizeable forward up front and one that has been one of the hottest goal scorer in the entire CHL is definitely a plus.

Mantha will be brought along very slowly and I don't have any problems with it all. He'll need time to sort out his issues and put on muscle mass. I like his goal scoring potential as a young age as it addresses a need for us eventually. The weak defensive game, need for weight and muscle and frustration problems are all pretty standard outside of the dozen or so can't miss prospects in every draft.

I'm content, haha, plus it isn't a draft until the brass trade down either way.

Unless you're picking in the top 5, it simply is that way with prospects. Almost all hockey players need to develop, especially 18 year olds. ;)

What did he say? Just want to know what you consider taking a dump all over someone...

Doesn't compete. Inconsistent. Plays in the perimeter

But if they guy becomes a 30 goal threat -- it's still a good pick...obviously - even if he's lazy like mule.

How much more does a guy have to compete when he* scores 50 goals? Defensively Mantha needs work, but I'm starting to hate this line of reasoning.

Craig Button ranked Mantha's compete level 4/5 so there's obviously two sides of that coin. But more encouraging 5/5 for ICE Q.
