I think you need to have two good stay at home dmen in this league that have the ability to move the puck effectively. If you look at the past cup winners, they've had at least two of these types of dmen on their corp. Hawks had Hjalmarsson, Roszival, and Seabrook, Kings had Mitchell, Scuderi, Matt Green, even Voynov, Bruins had Boychuk and McQuaid, and then Chara to an extent.

Coburn -> Effective two way defender who can skate, move the puck, defend top offensive threats in the league, etc
Streit -> Offensive dman, PP quaterback
Schenn -> Physical stay at home dman, who isn't awful at skating and can move the puck effectively on most nights
Grossmann ->Same as Schenn, but a bit slower and a more effective shot blocker
Gus -> Positional two way defender, solid puck mover, and can play the point on the PP

Honestly, this isn't a bad group of defenders going forward. They are missing one more exceptional two way type of guy, who could also be a PP specialist. This is Kimmo's role, and it'll be hard to fill it. Streit probably can't do all the things Kimmo does unfortunately.
Over the last five games or so, Gus/LSchenn have played well as a pair. They fill the bill as a second pairing. Streit/Grossmann haven't been that bad when paired together but not a top pair for NHL standards. Coburn/anyone on the roster is not a top pair right now. However, that being said, the prospects are looking good. It looks to me that with Alt, Ghostisbehere, Bourdon and such the need to sign a player like McDonald is unnecessary.

MacDonald would be a minor upgrade but at what cost?

We don't need more #4 - #7 role players, there's already too many of them on the roster.

Andrew MacDonald is worth between $2M & $3M; he'll get $5M on the open market.

He would be the equivalent of Mez (they don't play the same style of defense, but MacDonald would be equally hated for what you expect him to do that he can't actually do).

Exactly..If Flyers can trade Mez(4+mil) or Grossmann(3.5mil) and dump Kimmo's salary(6mil) at the end of the year we have room for a couple of top 4 pairing Dmen, plus the salary cap going up the Flyers will indeed have money to blow. I don't know about you guys but I'm tired of the Flyers and signing of aging Dmen...will Hagg be ready for the NHL soon? He looked good at the WJuniors.

Trevor Daley - Your Opinions

Heard a rumor the Penguins were interested in Trevor Daley.
Any interest in Daley as a replacement for Grossman?
Or would you rather trade for a young NHL ready prospect to upgrade the third pairing?

Be kinda tough to get one of those. I'd love Brendon Dillon, as long as we're talking about Stars players. Jamie Oleksiak would be a great grab too but methinks they aren't keen on moving him.

I wish Boston was stupid enough to trade us Torey Krug

MacDonald is not an upgrade. For Streit's faults, he stood the most to gain from Streit leaving, and hasn't.

It would also be hilarious if the Flyers went for him being that they just signed the guy he replaced.

No kidding. The Isles are realizing how much they miss Streit now that they realize AMac can't do the job.

Zero chance he is picked up. Does he get buried in the AHL?

I think MacDonald simply illustrates the reality of FA signings in sports with guaranteed contracts - stay away from long-term big money deals, if you need a patch, sign an older veteran to a 1-2 year deal that you can walk away from without significant pain. Depend on the draft to add talent, not free agency.

The problem is simple, the "winner's curse" - there's always some GM trying to win now to keep his job who convinces himself the player is worth the inflated money - so whoever "wins" the auction is almost certain to overpay. And since most FAs are close to 30 or older, the estimate of the player's value is framed by his performance in his peak years from 26-29, not his expected performance from 30-35.

One good thing about Holmgren's GM stint......tons of lessons learned! Sadly we have to suffer the consequences for another year or 2.....ugh

doubt he gets picked up even by Arizona or Buffalo.
Thought they may just go the easier route and waive Manning, no one would pick him up either because he sucks but at least his contract doesn't suck as well.

Hextall: "Mac's a good player, we can't forget that, and I'm convinced he's gonna be back in the NHL being a productive player at some point".

http://flyers.nhl.com/

He makes it sound like he'll be back, maybe (and this my own speculation) after LSchenn is traded.
