This is the best solution for both parties. It gets the Jets out of cap-hell and puts pressure on them to craft a new deal going forward.

Think of it as merely a 4.5 month extension--they can extend him further as early as Jan 1, 2022--which puts him first in line for next year instead of perennially last.

If I am Copp I say to Chevy--I've done you a solid for this year, partially out of good faith, but if I am not shown equal good faith well before the end of the season I am going straight to UFA.

I hope that never happens. Copp has the ability to be a leader and key cog on a championship team in the manner of Kris Draper, who we traded to Detroit for $1 almost 30 years ago. Let's not make that mistake again!

I think it’s completely fair at this point if he chooses to leave for more money. This contract benefits both of us as we can make a run and he can focus on really upping his value even more.

A reasonable one-year rent-a-Copp deal. Smart play by both sides. Hopefully with full arenas this year, HRR will bounce back and the cap will rise next year, giving Copp the opportunity to cash in. This also allows the Jets to see if Copp's production was a blip.

Wish I had a rent-a-copp last weekend. Would’ve change my whole future. :eyeroll:

Great news! The financial reality of using him as anything other than our own rental has been obvious since the Pionk signing.

This even leaves enough to keep Beaulieu around.

Not that I would. Personally the best move would be eliminating both Niku & Beaulieu from the roster & promoting Nogier as the defensive scratch. Leaves almost enough cap space for a full NHL salary.

Always appreciate your Posts in how they break down the details. Thank you & those who are providing links with additional information. So nice to get so much in one Thread.

I agree that Copp is like a Rental for this Season and though I was sad to see Apples go, I agree with @Daximus here, I think it was done to keep DeMelo rather than Copp.

Now once the Season starts, Chevy can accrue Cap Space daily (or wherever he can) and hopefully there’s enough to pick up a complimentary player for a deep playoff run.

I'm feeling a strong sense of confidence for the upcoming season.
Someone bring me back to reality.

chevy made solid some moves for sure. on paper they look good. still think they can use another top-9fwd but there's no space anymore. i mean it's year 11 for chevy and this has been likely his most aggressive off-season to address a team weakness? it's about time.

My order of best to worse scenario

1. Long term deal at reasonable salary term
2. Short term 2-4 year deal at reasonable rate
3. Trading for a Copp clone or better at a reasonable cost
4. 1 year deal to FA at a reasonable cost
5.. trade for below Copps value or just for futures
6. Medium term deal at an over pay, cap surgery
7. 1 year arb award with hard feelings
8. long term deal at over pay, cap surgery

Not the best scenario but I'm OK with it all things considered.

Perhaps if the Jets are buyers at the deadline, they trade for a couple of possible Copp replacements. Then in the off season, try to resign one of Copp, Copp replacement 1, Copp replacement 2.

Alright. It's August 12 and Chevy can finally go to the cottage for a few weeks.

We're done until training camp. Time to relax. What the heck will we post about now?

Good news, I like it. Chevy being creative and Copp playing along. Chevy is going for this year clearly, I like it.
