Great news! The financial reality of using him as anything other than our own rental has been obvious since the Pionk signing.

This even leaves enough to keep Beaulieu around.

Not that I would. Personally the best move would be eliminating both Niku & Beaulieu from the roster & promoting Nogier as the defensive scratch. Leaves almost enough cap space for a full NHL salary.

Flatish cap next year, Stastny and Beaulieu money comes off the books, but Dubois will need a new long term deal (probably 7 per or more if he finds his game again).

Doesn't leave much room for a higher priced extension for Copp later. But I'm glad he's in for this season at least.

Love that he was willing to do what needed to be done to make sure we put the strongest team possible on the ice this year!!! He's such a beauty! Copp's a real character guy so we shouldn't have expected anything less.

Next year we'll need to pay up if we want to keep him but if he decides to go elsewhere he's earned that right.

With Stastney off the books it may depend a bit on the year that PLD puts up and how much of Stastney's money he needs and what will be leftover for Copp's raise.

Not out of the realm of possibility that he extends here next offseason but it likely depends on how this year works out and what he gets offered on the open market next summer.

One year is unfortunate for obvious reasons but it's not a foregone conclusion that he'll be gone for nothing.

Nice they were able to git him in for this season anyways!
He'll be 28 next year and will have likely played his best hockey. They got 7 years out of him, let someone else deal with the overpriced UFA years. It would be nice to handle every player like that.

Yup hes getting $5.5 million next offseason for 7 years like Hyman imo. Don't want anything to do with a contract like that. This gives Cole and Ves another year to get ready to take Paul and Andrew's slots.

A one year negotiated extension is not at all surprising , and fits well with the situation that both organization and player find themselves in. The contract amount is probably fair as well.

Got to give Copp some credit here - he's betting on himself and taking a significant risk that he can keep his level of play high this season, even though many suggest last season might have been a bit of an outlier (6 team canadian division only). If things do not unfold as he forsees, he could have much less success with his first UFA contract negotiation.
