Because they bring different facets to the game. Being possibly the best intimidator in the game means something. He's literally shut down players from other side with his presence.
You don't necessarily have to shutdown other clubs fourth liners though. On the bottom six, you want grinders that can create havoc and put in some secondary scoring. Sure, defence is also very important and your top PKers are around this role most definitely, but I think work ethic and toughness is the most important aspect. For example, look at the Lightning wins with a ridiculous third line, while Islanders had the best fourth line in the game and it didn't get them anywhere.

I want to tag @Richard88 to see if all the other players I mentioned are better in their analytics.

Love picking up the scraps of washed-up vets. Fantastic, it's almost as if I can smell the second-round exit from here.
Maaaate, you're REALLY down on the trades today. Can you do me one solid, and just wait for the next few games to see the finished product (well, closer to it until Byram and Landy return).

You'll be happy and surprised my man, I promise.

But he hasn't , I forget who, but he literally chased away a teams top line player one game (wish I could remember who), and was even goading him.

Clearly this move was to help the PK, along with Lehkonen. Good depth move for cheap.

There's going to be some competition for the 4th line between Strum, LOC, NAK, Maltsev, Cogliano, and Helm. Three will make it in a healthy lineup, and three will sit.

Carpenter, Motte, Cogliano, Larsson

Carpenter: The benefit over Cogliano would have been that he would've given the Avs another RHS for faceoffs. They already have Helm and Sturm as LHS's, but only Compher as RHS, so that would have balanced things a bit there. Just a small detail.

Motte: His numbers are a bit weird as they've changed over the last year from being good at PK/bad at 5v5, to bad at PK/good at 5v5. The fact that he's not a center who can take faceoffs worked against him. I said this morning that I would have liked the Avs to get him because of his fit stylistically, but the same could be said for Cogliano.

Larsson: Numbers from two years ago and numbers now. He's fantastic defensively at 5V5 which is obviously the big selling point. Not as strong on the PK though, and I think the Avs have the 4C spot covered with Sturm and would rather have some speedy guys like Helm/Cogliano/LOC on the PK. He'd also have costed a 3rd instead of a 5th too, and with not a lot of assets it's understandable that the Avs went cheaper for what will be a 13/14th F.

Heree are Cogliano's numbers for comparison, both from last summer and today. Playing on a bad SJ team has impacted his numbers overall, but his EV defense and PK remains really strong.

Thanks brethren! Analytically speaking, Avs did well compared to the rest of the pack. I will reserve judgement on this trade until I see how he fits with our squad, but I still think at this moment Carpenter or Motte would've been a tad better.

I'm perfectly fine with this as long as Helm never sees the ice again. Sturm, Cogliano, LOC, NAK... Helm should be the 14th FW now. maybe even 15th if McGoon is in the lineup for security reasons.

Based on TOI it’s gonna be NAK and Helm coming out for Lehkonen and Cogs. Bednar clearly trusts everyone else a lot more including LOC and JTC

I don't know why people still shit all over Helm, especially lately when IMO he's been playing quite well. He's still the best PK forward not named Nichushkin on the team, and in some ways, he's even better than Nuke in that department. And people don't want to admit this but he's been way, way better than NAK or LOC the last month or so, if not longer.

I'd like to see what he can do with better linemates than what he's had. For whatever reason NAK has completely hit the skids, Jost was terrible, and to my surprise, MacDermid appears to be a lot better on defense than as a winger.

According to an article from The Athletic, Colorado is where Cogliano wanted to go, so San Jose worked to accommodate that request.

Okay this makes total sense. I'm almost certain the FO had their sights set on Motte, but then SJ comes to Joe with a hungry vet that can skate like the team needs him to, is a PK specialist and most importantly, is a guy that actually wants to be here and win here.

So Joe being Joe, recognizes the potential there and made it happen. Let's hope he made a shrewd call here and Cogs is a warrior for us in the playoffs.

I mean I'm not sure I'd say he's been way, way better than NAK or LOC, but the shine has fallen off of their stars if you know what I mean. Helm's been consistent and after somewhat of a piss-poor start (probably adapting to new team and system and increasing his conditioning) he's been pretty consistent and noticeable to me in a good way.

NYR 4th is projected to be earlier than the Avs 4th (if the Avs even had a 4th in the next two drafts) so Sakic would have had to give up a 3rd or 4th+ to beat the NYR offer. Under those circumstances a 5th for Cogliano seemed like better value.

I thought he played well last night, his skating is clearly still top tier and that should bode really well for the way this team plays. Should be a good locker room guy as well. I also think even though he's not a big guy, he'll bring more of toughness/physicality element to the 4th line then some of our other guys. He's not afraid to throw a big hit(As we saw on Podkolzin last night) and willing to engage in the rough stuff as well.

I actually think he'd be a good candidate for us to re-sign this summer as well. Likely only going to cost league minimum to bring back and I think his desire to win a cup would give us a good chance to get him back here next year. Whether as the 13th forward or to replace Helm as the speed PK winger on the 4th line.
