Markov is probably the player I loved the most over the years and I actually own his jersey but if Washington are serious about trying to win it all fast and offer us a package like Kuznetsov + 1st round pick I would not hesitate and trade him.

I love our team this year but I want a dominant team for the next 10 years and we have some nice pieces (Gallyx2, Pacioretty, Subban, Price) but if in the next 2 to 3 years we can add up more it would make us a contender for years to come.

that's my 2 cent.

Yes, it depends on the package but a team will have to overpay for him.

Markov is still the second most important player on the team after Subban. People here underestimate his impact because apparently he is "old" and "slow" but take Markov out of the lineup and see the result. The team would not be in second and Subban would not be a PPG defenseman right now.

Nobody comes close (even Subban) to Markov's ability to retrieve the puck from the opponent and take it out of the zone.

doubt they do that after loosing forsberg.

But I agree, he would cost that amount, maybe more.

Hab fans are really underestimating the importance of this guy and, yes, he still gets the toughest assignments on the ice which has really freed pk up.

it's good news when you have two #1 d man. I wouldn't be upset if we moved him for the right price...

Best Habs player tonight IMO. Along with Eller and Chucky.

Real solid game from the General, good pinches.

Looking at the numbers, it collaborates what I thought - despite the issue on the second goal, Markov had a great game and was dominating out there despite playing a defensive role.

Perhaps Drewhiskie is a better partner for him than we think?

He wasn't the same offensively as Markov in the past. Shot too much to score than look for deflections or back-door plays.

He's not the same Markov as he was in the past. That Markov is long gone.

This Markov is still a solid middle pairing 5 on 5 defender and PP monster though.

Markov is still an asset. I don't doubt for one minute that the Bruins would like to have him.

He's lost a step skating wise. I think part of his problems have to do with adapting to what he acn currently do, most goals he's been at fault on he reacted in a way in which he still had that "5th gear" to get back and he couldn't. He still reads the play like nobody's business, just can't be as agressive at the offensive blueline.

He is still a 6 mil calibre NHL defenseman and a top 15-20 guy overall. You put him and Subban out there together and you can see how dangerous both are.

He still needs to adjust to his limitations speed-wise but he's been real good these past few games and overall the entire season, bar a rough stretch in the middle. He is extremely good with the stick, great poke checks and his outlet passes are as crisp as can be. I think getting away from Emelin is a bit of a blessing in disguise, because as good as Emelin has been for us, they don't compliment each other very well.

Markov is also the best power play quarterback in the league bar none. Those one touch passes...

Him intercepting passes because he knows how the play will end up is nothing short of godlike. Think it was last night where he was just waiting for the puck to come to him even though Buffalo (or wash) made some really quick passes.

really think the healthy season + full summer can really help him get 2 if not 3 great seasons. He can improve ... sounds weird to say but I still look at this season as rehab in his case. btw agree 100% with ur post. Id add that diaz was also great at moving the puck with one touch passes.

Absolutely. The Habs would currently battling for a playoff spot without him.

Man, Subban is +9 while Markov is dead last with -10 ! That stats does reflect more or less that Markov struggles a bit at defence.

Markov has been struggling lately but +/- says as much about usage (and Therrien) as it does about Markov.

Subban needs to start playing 30 minutes. That means Gorges also plays more minutes.
Markhov needs to play LESS! He's struggled last few games (along with everyone else except Subban on the back end). It might be fatigue.

Depending on how Diaz looks in his return, I'd entertain offers for Markov at the draft. I just can't see his leg holding up over 82 games and he should have value. Always loved the guy, but his skating is cringe worthy now.

I don't think his leg holing up for 82 games is an issue. ACL surgery if they heal well, should be just like new. Guys like Malkin Wisniewski Galchenyuk have come back and played some of their best hockey after ACL surgery.

This year's 48 games is tougher than next year's 82 as there will be more off days between games and less condensed schedule. Playing huge minutes and recovery time may be Markov's biggest problem.

Completely agree. It's his first year back after barely playing for two years and the schedule is brutal. There will be considerably more days off next year and it may help him (and everyone for that matter) recover and be better rested for games. That said, it is obvious that going forward we cannot lean on him as much as we have. He needs more support and he needs more sheltered minutes. I really don't think the -10 is a reflection of his ability. He needs to have second pairing responsibilities with second pairing minutes. He doesn't have the speed, stamina or endurance to play 25+ minutes against top lines. He will still be an important member of this team going forward but it's clear he needs less responsibility. Hopefully Diaz and Emelin continue progressing and are able to take some of the pressure off Markov next year. And then Tinordi and Beaulieu will be ready to step in a few years from now.

Markov has had good and bad games, but we must remember this is his first full season in years. Overall he's been very good. Tough minutes against tough opponents. It's easy to get hung up on the times he gets burned due to lack of foot speed, but he's remarkably solid in our zone with good stick work, poke checks and outlet passes that are second to none. I think we'll see an improvement next year. He's actually performed above my expectations. His skating is not good but his vision and hockey IQ is intact. He just needs to adjust to his limitations and he'll continue to be effective for us for a long time.

He's genius on the PP. His passing, his shot, his movement... it's a joy to watch.

I would trade him at the draft with one year left on his contract.

Try to trade him and a third to a team like Edmonton then draft Nikita Zadorov 6'5 230 D.

Add him to Diaz Tinordi Emelin Beaulieu Subban and Gorges and that's a nice young D.

Subban Diaz on the first PP unit

D- pairings

Subban Tinordi
Emelin Diaz
Gorges Boullion
Beaulieu

Trade Desharnais and a Calgary's 2nd to Columbus for their first (currently 13th overall) and hope to draft Max Domi

Move Eller to second line C role

Markov cap hit 5.75 plus Desharnais Cap hit 3.5 = 9.25 million

Use that money to resign Ryder and a third line C with Size and a mean streak

I'd also try and trade Gionta and Moen.

Ah to play GM is so much fun....seems so easy on the internet! LOL

Have a great day everyone!

I love how fans dismiss Markov as "only" a power play specialist at this point - which isn't really true, even if he's not as good 5 on 5 as he used to be, and even if it was, he still has more points than most forwards on this team, including ones who get PP time (Gionta and Desharnais, I'm looking at you).

He's not untouchable by any means but this is not where the problem starts, sorry.

And they also dismiss his entire ES play on some visible mistakes. They are not all of it, if you watch him closely during a game you'll see how many incredible things he does. Sure he pinches at bad times and lacks the foot speed to make it up, but equally he leads the team in takeaways, is great with the poke check in our own end and of course delivers outlet passes like Jesus... if he would've done any
