The guy gradually went from playing like his former-self top 10 D in the league to playing like a bum...watching him these last few games has been very infuriating. Him and Emelin always get caught pinching and it's resulted in goals from the opposition a few times this season and it's so annoying!

He has lost some foot speed, and he does get caught pinching a little more than he used to, but that's par for the course when discussing an offensive defenseman.

My opinion is to get everything that we can out of him this season and shop him around in the offseason.

Just like Cole, we are starting to see the decline of a very good player. May as well try to get something in return.

With all of that said, Markov has been huge for the Canadiens despite losing a little bit of speed.

I'm a HUGE fan of the defensive pinch. So I'm biased. I hated that Jacques Martin's Canadien's didn't pinch often. Whereas I find Michel Therrien's is very in favour of the pinch.

So I feel like they are just trying to do their job. Keeping offensive zone, and really on a proper defensive pinch one forward should come up high near the line to defend on a failed pinch. Which I think has been done fairly well this year.

Really I think pacioretty (and I'm a big patch fan) has been paying absolutely dismal defense in our zone.

I wish we had 4 other bums like him + Subban.

Well careful what you wish for...
1 Markov + 1 Subban = 8.625m

6 Markov + 0 Subban = 34.5m
5 Markov + 1 Subban = 31.625m
4 Markov + 2 Subban = 28.75m
3 Markov + 3 Subban = 25.875m
2 Markov + 4 Subban = 23m
1 Markov + 5 Subban = 20.125m
0 Markov + 6 Subban = 17.5m

I'll take 6 subbans anyday of the week over any other combination

We are talking about the same Markov right.......You know the one that plays with one leg.
I watch him play and he seems to play very cautious.
Cant blame him after missing almost 2 years to knee injury.

last game should serve as a wake up call to Therrien.

Limit him to 22 minutes per game.

The pinch is part of the system the new coaching staff implemented. Obviously teams are going to get caught from time to time but that is the price you pay for playing an up-tempo game. The result is more scoring chances for our team and the overall results have been very good. I would sooner win 6-5 than lose 2-1 and that is what we are getting... wins.

But then no one should have to explain that to someone who understands hockey.

Like someone said last year, Jacques Martin won't be happy until he wins a game by a score of zero to minus one. Is that really what you want

Wait till two years from now... If he keeps it up... He'll be one of the highest paid defenseman in the league. Wether it's us shelling up the cash (which I hope) or another team.

Do you really think that was an intelligent post?

Blame the coach for overplaying him.

Pretty much this...he's being overplayed. If we want to get the most out of him then I think a non-fatigued Markov would be most effective and help out the team best...he should be played 20-22 mins a game and I'm sure we'll see improvement, no more 25-30 mins games for him anymore please.

You are wayy too general.

He had a rough game against Boston, but I thought he played a strong game against Pittsburgh.

Yeah he's had a few rough games, I think part of it is a lot of minutes, lots of games and very little days off. Overall he's been a huge asset on defense.

One of the reasons why I am liking Therrien's system this season.

An active and engaged D corp leads to a lot more offense. As long as you have responsible forwards who know how to cover for a pinching D man.

Yah, I bet it'll make everyone wish Subban got locked up for longer. I hate Markov's contract but at the same time I guess I realize that contract was given to him pre-lockout and assuming he would be back in action at the start of last season, but I wish the habs gave him a 1 year deal instead of that 3 year deal. To me, his offensive points alone this season haven't been worth it, he's lost a step defensively (in large part due to his speed)

Do you really think that was an intelligent post?

No, but do you really think that was a post you should have taken so seriously?

I agree, Markov has been huge on the back end but mostly due to that extra offense he provides. He's the ideal PP QB most teams should want, but it's not just his game against Boston...I've started to notice him before that game but I agree with you, I think it might have to do with how many minutes he plays

Playing with 5 defensemen hurt us, and as Pierre McGuire said, Boston loaded up their speed line (Bergeron-Seguin-Marchand) against the Markov-Emelin pair. They torched them. It's not the first time their lack of speed has been problematic, they need to be more careful.

He is an offensive specialist with huge flaws in his game since his comeback. To be productive he has to take risks, and before his injuries he could somehow recover his mistakes but right now it's kinda sad when the puck gets behind him at the blue line.

He has carried us for the last 10 years+. Never complained or bashed, loves the kids, supports the dinged up UFAs we manage to get, AND has the statistics to back his character up. Old, damaged, and playing as best he can. Never went for the BIG money either... and he could have easily done so, but he chose to stay a HAB! Guys/Gals, we (myself included) b*tch about wanting something special on our team while having had it all along. Just my .02 I think we should retire his number. Honestly? We need to do it. :yo:

Tinordi shouldn't be playing if MT won't put him on the ice...

Back-to-back games for Markov, while playing more minutes because of only 5 defensemen... He has lost a step from his injuries and you can see he gets tired much easier now.

He's still a solid defenseman, but last night was obviously a very bad game for him.

Markov is fine. He could use a different partner. Emilin is a fine Defender but IMO, he belongs on the left. Also,Markov is overplayed in some situation...mainly on the pk. At the same time, MT hasn't really any other option.

He had one bad game. Chill out. He's no longer a first pairing defender and Therrien is overplaying him significantly, but he only played like a "bum" in the last game.

He's still a legitimate middle pairing even strength and along with Subban the only reason the Habs are somehow in the top third in the league on power plays. Even in his worst game of the season he set up the game tying goal.

He hasn't changed his style, it's just that he went from a high-success pinching ratio to a lower one recently. He doesn't pinch more, he just gets caught more.

This was one reason he was so dominant, he was a pinching god. He was the best or one of the best players in the league at judging when to pinch and keeping the puck in the opposing zone. But now he's failing a lot for some reason.
