Damn, that's a horrific hit on Johnson. Massive concussion.

I really, really hope he's okay.

Sounds like Keefe expects him to be out for the series, if not longer..

EDITED: Clearer and longer version of the hit..

What I heard yesterday (heard, not confirmed) was that he didn't know who the Marlies staff were at the hospital. Maybe cause he just arrived to Canada or is he really messed up? :(

Get well soon Andreas! <3

Toronto Marlies’ Andreas Johnson Out Indefinitely
After Taking ‘Sickening’ Elbow To The Head

ALBANY, N.Y. — No matter what suspension Dan Kelly of the Devils gets, the Marlies are grateful Andreas Johnson is not seriously injured.

As the American Hockey League considers what to do about Tuesday’s elbow to the head of the Swedish winger, Johnson was released from a local hospital early Wednesday morning with a suspected concussion.

“He was in pretty rough shape leaving here,” said coach Sheldon Keefe, whose team went on to a 7-2 win to even the best-of-seven North Division final 2-2. “He didn’t remember anything and there was pretty good cause for concern when he went off to the hospital.

“A member of our training staff and our captain, Andrew Campbell, stayed with him. (After his release) we took care of him through the night. He came to breakfast late this morning in good spirits and that made me feel a lot better after watching that hit over and over. It was sickening. We don’t expect him back on the ice anytime soon.”

The Marlies were pointing to a 12-game suspension given to the Ontario Reign’s Kurtis MacDermid earlier this season for a similar hit as a possible template for the league to follow in its ruling, but no decision was handed down as of Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson, 21, was chosen 202nd overall in 2013 and had risen to prominence late this season by winning the Swedish League title with Frolunda. He was not expecting to try out for the Leafs until next year, but the club thought he should get some ice time with the Marlies.

“One of the sad things is that I thought in the first period Andreas was our best forward and playing some of his best hockey,” Keefe added. “I was really happy with his game and it’s a big loss for us in the series.”

Keefe was fuming right after the penalty-filled game, calling the elbow “the worst kind of hit that there is the game today. Their guy comes in looking for a huge hit, our guy gets out of the way and he makes sure he gets a piece of him.”

Johnson became the second Marlie hurt in the series after defenceman Stu Percy took a cross check to the back of the neck during overtime in Game 3. He missed Tuesday’s game. Keefe predicted it would be a tight window to see if Percy makes it into Game 5 Thursday, the last of three at Times Union Center before the series concludes in Toronto.

Two Devils were banged up in the Toronto portion of the series, centres Jim O’Brien and Pavel Zacha and their status for the rest of the series is in doubt.

Albany coach Rick Kowalsky said the Kelly hit and his team’s rogue behaviour from Game 4 had to be curbed if they wanted to get back in the series.

“It’s a mental thing, we have to re-focus,” he said. “We obviously got a little bit frustrated with the calls and the non-calls., But you can’t control that. It leaked into our execution and we didn’t have the puck. And when you don’t have the puck, you’re more susceptible to taking those penalties. You just have to get a kill and move on.”

Albany has been short 22 times the past three games, but it wasn’t a sore point until the slumping Marlies offence scored four power-play goals.

This seems to have been left up to interpretation by the players

That elbow came up with purpose. Sickening is definitely the right word. That injury had nothing to do with a bad pass, or coming over the blue line in a lateral motion. Those are old excuses, used in the 80's and 90's. The game isn't played that way anymore. Kelly knew Johnson was going to deke around him, he wasn't in proper position to take him out legally, so he chucked his elbow in his face. That injury was totally Kelly's fault. One should expect to be able to play the game without an elbow being thrown at your head. The NHL, all professional sports wants more skill in the game. This guy should be given the boot from professional hockey as an example.

I think it's a little fast to give him the boot.. and maybe a suspension of 30 games would send a clear message across the League.. But than again, if he has a long a recent history of this, than I would bring out the boot.., yes..

I just watched te game and the hit seemed calculated to me SEER. 30 games is nice but I wouldn't mind if he never played hockey again. Imo the coach should be fined too. It's obvious that Albany plays this style of hockey and the coach deciding that.

this is the type of hit that needs to be gone from the game.

straight head hunting with the elbow. was no longer in a good position to throw a hit so he made sure he tagged him

disgraceful.

12 game suspension -at least-

seems like this is just how albany plays tho. just a pathetic group of divers and cheap shots.

That guy put the elbow up like the dirtbag he is. He aimed at the head. He is screwed and deserves everything he gets. I believe eye for an eye and i hope we go after their skill guys hard and fair next game.
