I just want a defenseman to play defense and prevent goals being scored on Blackwood or whoever is there. If Bahl can do that great. It’s not like any of the 6-7 guys currently on the team seem capable of doing that consistently.

Personally I prefer the actual asset, that being the 3rd rounder, then the highly unlikely event of this years 1st rounder being a lottery pick.

Now this has certainly not been a positive turn of events considering how promising the 17-18 season went, punctuated by Hall's play, and it's been a bit of an unfortunate string of events which got us here, a big part of that being Hall's injury, I think it also speaks to how fragile success can be for all but the true top tier teams. Not that I think Shero should be clear of criticism. I think that lens is now on him now that Hynes is gone. Not on the hot seat, but we are, imo, moving past the point of happily accepting high picks.

Whether Shero survives past next season will depend on two things. (i) Does he pick the right coaching staff; (ii) beyond hopefully getting one of Lafrennier, Byfield or Raymond, does his not very much talked about but very obvious plan to create a Boston/St. Louis style defense -- one or two undersized guys like Smith, but the rest big bodies who can handle things in their own end -- look like it'll bear results.

That conditional pick in 2021 is purely to balance out based on Arizona's success this year.

If they win a round the 2020 pick jumps to low 20s and the Devils are compensated by a second round pick in 2020. If they miss the playoffs, Devils get a pick 15 or lower and a third round pick.

I still wouldn't say Hall coming back to the Devils is completely out of the picture. Obviously a lot has to happen, but if the Devils can pull bolster the prospect pool with even more prospects, get a legitimate coach (Boudreau, Cooper, Laviolette), and maybe flip some assets into another top pairing defender, I could see Hall giving the Devils another shot.

What the New Jersey Devils are getting in prospect Kevin Bahl - TheHockeyNews

Sharing an informative article I found on Kevin Bahl. It is encouraging that his skating is actually being praised. All too often we associate (and rightfully so) big men as not being fleet of foot. This writer says Bahl’s skating is a “standout trait.” I’ll temper my expectations with the possibility that is hyperbole but it’s still comforting to hear he isn’t some big, slow slug. It also sounds like Bahl isn’t the proverbial grenade handling physical D-man either. While he may not have a ton of offensive upside, it appears he’s capable of making the smart plays with the puck. From a statistical standpoint, the player has shown great improvement this year with 5 goals and 15 assists. in 28 games. Bahl netted 6 goals and 24 assists in 68 games the previous season.

Yet we have people complaining about a player like Bahl because he's one-dimensional.

I think everyone we have on D is one-dimensional. Just... they have a different dimension.

Hall seemed like he genuinely liked it here. The whole departure seemed like Shero did it in everyone's best interest.

If Shero does some serious work before July 1st, I don't see too many teams offering Hall the type of money and long-term outlook as the Devils. His options will likely be either try to hitch onto Boston, Pittsburgh, etc. for some runs under their current core or go to another team in a similar boat as the Devils.

A lot of time between there and now, but Devils will have cap space and wealth of assets to make moves. Three biggest issues we need to clear up are hiring a perennial playoff coach with a solid resume (Cooper, Boudreau, or Laviolette would be ideal), add another top defender, and provide Blackwood with a quality tandem goalie. If Shero pulls off those three, I could see it.

This is crazy-insane(in a "are you for f'n real?" way) talk but :

Is Bahl going to end up being another Volchenkov?

I don’t think anyone in the organization is happily accepting high picks.

These teams haven’t been manufactured to lose or be bad. Not on purpose by any stretch. This is silly talk

No not purposely but there is an escape hatch that is easily pulled once any thoughtfully put together team goes south. Last year and now this year. It’s definitely not silly talk. Silly talk is finding small encouragements within a dumpster fire and reciting the same platitudes every year.

You can't get gun-shy about any and all defensive minded defensemen because we had one traumatic experience. Get back on the horse.

If he's the Volchenkov the Sens got, that wouldn't be a bad thing. He was older and worn down by the time he got here.

Correct me if I am wrong but prime Volchenkov never had good hands, was a smooth skater or was good at breakouts which has been touted for Bahl ever since his rise after the draft.

in my mind, it looks like we lost Hall and we may not have even gotten a single player (or picks that will turn into players) that will ever make a real NHL contribution. Not great.

A prime Volchenkov was a good defenceman
If Bahl turned out like that I’d be thrilled

Volchenkhov in his prime was like a much better version of 2012 playoffs Bryce Salvador.

If we’re very lucky, Bahl becomes a Parayko clone. Has a bit of a similar pedigree. If we’re very unlucky, we’ve got an Erik Gudbranson on our hands which is a player that isn’t that good but who keeps hanging around because of his physical attributes.

Prospects are always a roll of the dice, no matter how highly touted they are by analysts, coaches, scouts, etc. We traded Hall for a handful of die rolls. Maybe they all make it, maybe none. Roll dem bones and see what happens.

How can you say the picks we got won't ever make a real NHL contribution? This is an asinine post. You have no idea who they're drafting, you have no idea what spot they're drafting in, etc. Stop thinking everything sucks.

It is impossible to make that assumption without knowing what any of these prospects will develop into, or what these draft picks will be.

People need to stop making these types of claims. They're pure nonsense. We're not going to know how this trade ends up for years on our side.

For a rental, Shero got plenty of assets. He now has to use them properly with drafting and developing.

well, the same could be said for the coyotes. if he doesn't re-sign and/or they don't win a cup this season they won't have anything to show for the deal either.
