This is a really good move for Ottawa. He is still a serviceable top 4 guy especially with the right partner which should be Brannstrom. He's owed 3M in cash but won't last the entire season so they will pay 2M+ not the full 3 and he will get back more than the 5th they paid for him. It's like the Namestnikov deal last year but a player that helps the team more and should get a better return for similar cap + cash.

You don’t seem to understand.

On a one year deal, Duclair’s cap hit WILL be exactly equal to his salary. We DO know that with 100% certainty. If the arbitrator gives him $900K, Melnyk pays $900K. If the arbitrator gives him $4M, Melnyk pays $4M. No gray area.

This is not the case for Gudbranson. His cap hit is $4M but his actual salary is only $3M. That is why Ottawa targeted Gudbranson.

No, I definitely understand how arbitration works and the contract works. He can't make $900K because the award can't be less than 85% of what he was already making.

The Senators have 4 other RFA's they qualified and have arbitration rights, so being worried that having guys on roster who have to be paid their cap hit because they only have 1 year contracts doesn't really apply.

Gudbranson they at least have a chance at flipping at the deadline if he has a decent season.

Ottawa could have gotten Nutivaara who is younger, cheaper and to be blunt a better defenseman.

Its cool that he is from the area and all, but getting an older guy for 3 million, when we just let another young player go for nothing who would likely make 3.5-4? Insanity...

Can you believe he was the centrepiece that Benning targetted and was traded for McCann and a 2nd round pick lol. Now he's in Ottawa for a 5th round pick. Amazing.

Gudbranson returns home to Ottawa. Also that sticker price implies a cap floor requirement.

LOL

Matt Murray has to be having PTSD about Gudbranson playing in front of him again.

Oh man. Ottawa can't pay Murray enough to play there.

Gudbransson will be fine if he gets the right D partner. So long as he’s not relied on to do any puck moving he’s very good in a complimentary role. With Lindholm and Fowler he thrived last season. When he was paired with anyone else I saw the same player who played in Vancouver who was barely an NHLer.

He'll probably be Brannstrom's partner, so this is good to hear.

Nice work Ottawa! dude gets kind of a bad rap on some parts of these forums, but he’ll be a pretty solid defenceman for you in a pretty decent cost. Plus he’s a local guy!
