Simultaneously not a bad trade for the Canes and yet a disappointing one IMO.
IMO value wise something closer to Hakanpaa + 3rd or 4th would have been closer value wise, but just simply more surprising that we moved a roster player and didn't go after a forward.
Shoulda just threw Rakell in the deal lol

This to me will go down as the most underrated trade of the day and could turn out really well for Anaheim.

I think he could be the perfect partner for Drysdale going forward as well.

I kinda think that’s why the move was made... back up plan if lindholm isn’t resigning

I thought the exact same, but for the Canes.

Overrated, well-known, former (7 years ago!) 1st-round pick for underrated, unknown, older defensive D whose play-style is really needed for the Cup contender he's going to. I really like this trade for the Canes.

Also, Hakanpaa is a likely re-sign for Carolina.

Did Fleury request a trade or something ? The returns seems very bad.
It just eats away at the depth on D when it comes to the ED. If they protect Bean they could lose Skjei putting them down to bean, Pesce, Slavin, and Gardiner on the D with Hamilton as a ufa.

Canes get a good team guy
Big
Uses the big body
Not a great skater but positions himself well and his size protects a big area
Blocks shots
And has improved tremendously in a couple years
As he adjusted to the NHL rinks/speed

I like this trade for us (Ducks) but Hakanpaa should be a solid responsible D for the playoffs which we won’t see for awahile

Sad to see Fleury go but this does diversify the Canes backend. We kinda desperately needed some sandpaper back there. When Pesce and Skjei are your physical d-men you're basically inviting opposing big forwards to go camp out in front of the crease.

I still think Fleury can be a 2-way top 4 guy with playing time. He's flashed enough offensive game over the years to justify a bigger role, he was just never going to get it here.

Sad to see Fleury go, but he just never turned into the player we expected him to be when he was drafted. He had plenty of opportunity, but never forced our hands into giving him more minutes. He had a good stretch at the end of last year when we had to play him more due to injuries, but regressed a lot this season to the point where he was a healthy scratch the other night when Gardiner came back.

He'll get an opportunity to get more mins in Anaheim, and it should do him a world of good. At least I hope so.

Excited to see what we have in Hakanpaa. Everything I'm seeing about him leads me to believe he's a perfect fit in terms of what we need on defense. Which, lets be honest, there wasn't much of a hole that we needed to fill, but he does it.

The other side of this for the Canes though is that it creates room for Sellgren to make his move to the team next season. He was a top 4 guy in the Charlotte Calder Cup run and has been an excellent top pairing guy in the SHL the last two years. The two reasons he stayed in the SHL this year (Canes LHD depth and Covid) won't be a factor next season.

Not sure I understand the purpose of this deal. Why would the canes get rid of Fluery before the playoffs only to replace him with an inexperienced D (Hakanpää) or worse consider putting Gards back into the lineup.

Carolina wins this trade imo. They upgrade defensively for the playoffs and gain a 6th round pick.
Hakanpaa is Josh Manson-lite. Aho gains a fellow Finn to talk in Finnish with.

Its an ok trade for Anaheim because Hakanpaa was a UFA they signed out of Finland.
So its literally trading a 6th for a 6th/7th Dman in Fleury.

Wow, Fleury really fell down the chart huh. Remember he was very hyped to be a big top pair defenseman one day.

Hope the Ducks re-sign Hawk in the summer, he was very solid. He was playing higher than he probably should have been (playing "top pair" with Fowler), but would be really good as a #4 if the team was healthy. This should allow Drysdale to play on the right side and give Larsson one last(?) chance to show what he's got for the rest of the year. Fowler/Fleury/Larsson (until Lindholm is back) on the left, Manson/Shat/Drysdale on the right.

Fleury showed flashes in last years playoffs of being who they hoped he'd be. But he's a little sloppy on defense, and he's not great on offense. With the depth the Canes have, I think they'd rather have a specialist that does one thing great to compliment the top guys, than average all around.

But I wouldn't be surprised if he keeps getting better.

LOL, are we really going to make all kinds of rationalizations about this trade when the all other contenders basically just threw their testicles on the table and were like "take these for a walk around the block", while this is the best the vaunted "Borg" can do?

Not sure I would call Hakanpää inexperienced. He's 5 years older than Fleury, he has won 2019 worlds and has won championship in Liiga and been to the finals twice. The 17 playoff games Fleury has in the NHL does not make him more experienced, especially when he barely played for half of those games.

Hakanpaa plays honest game , hits a lot, clears net not afraid to stand up for teammates

I think cane fans will like him

Darren’s eyes aren’t very good.

“That puck was nowhere near Tsarasynko”:laugh:

I confess I don’t know the player, but that style is good for Canes playoff needs if he delivers it consistently

Edit: apologies for the totally butchered spelling

I don't get it for the Ducks. Seems like Hakanpaa is somebody they wanted to re-sign.

Fluery seems like another underwhelming player. 2014 draftee who can't play in the top-4.
we can still resign hakanpaa, this reminds me a bit of the despres trade which ended up kinda good for Anaheim until his injury
