The French didn't find a need to fire their Captain.

The French navy's flagship, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, is returning to home port after dozens of crew members showed signs of COVID-19, the armed services ministry announced Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry said aboard the vessel "around forty sailors are today under close medical observation. They are showing symptoms consistent with possible COVID-19 infection."

"The first cases showed symptoms recently," the ministry said. "There are no signs of aggravated cases among the patients."

Following joint exercises in the Baltic Sea with other European navies, the carrier was originally scheduled to return to the Mediterranean port of Toulon on April 23, but following the likely cases aboard, it was ordered back early, according to the website Naval News.

French Aircraft Carrier Returns To Port After Suspected COVID-19 Cases Found Aboard

A chronic illness has kept me out of the Army, so I’ve never been a member of the US Armed Forces (despite trying to enlist more than once). Having disclosed all that, I can only say what I’m about to as a civilian.

One of the things I would have detested most about military life - in any branch - is that there must always be a scapegoat whenever something goes wrong. Always.

“A bunch of sailors got some crazy bug we’ve never seen before and it’s plaguing the whole planet? Well, the buck stops with the captain. Must be HIS fault.” I find that mentality absolutely infuriating. This isn’t a badly planned mission that got an entire squad of Green Berets killed - this is a virus. To hold men accountable for acts of God, forces of nature, whatever you want to call it, is asinine.

I have read nothing anywhere that has led me to believe that the Captain was negligent. His crew seemed okay with his command.

I’m glad the Secretary of the Navy stepped down. To openly criticize a high ranking officer in the media is disgraceful, especially since I have yet to hear any compelling argument that incompetence on the part of the captain led to an outbreak aboard his carrier.

What a shameful age we live in.

Doing the same with all mail & packages. Gloves, then it sits in the garage for a few days. The outer packaging doesn’t come in the house. I think @talkinaway originally gave me the ideas. Thanks bud.

yup. Best to assume anything you touch may be contaminated.
We grab mail with gloves or baggie and leave in garage couple of days too.

Same with bags of puppy food.

Well we seem to be doing something right with the new models saying we're going to end up with less deaths than we did with the 2017-18 flu season. (please note I'm not comparing the 2 I know this is way worse and a shit ton of people would have died if we all didn't stay in our houses.)

My brother & I just received this text message this morning from a close friend who works as a mailman for the USPS:

“I want to give you a guys a heads up. Wear gloves when you touch or open your mail. Multiple people in the plant in providence tested positive. They had 100 call outs yesterday and 160 call outs today. The cdc isn’t sure if or how long the virus can stay on mail. But all of the mail for this entire area goes through that plant before it gets to you.”
Thanks for sharing.

I douse all of my mail in lysol and let it dry before I open it.

Canadian Gov`t far from perfect but I have to credit them with their swift financial response for this guy. I applied Monday for one of the 3 income assistance programs I will qualify for even with my wife working (although her hours cut drastically too), woke up this morning with a notice from my bank that a deposit had already been made.

Grateful

For many days after the first positive test, as the coronavirus silently spread throughout the New York region, Mr. Cuomo, Mr. de Blasio and their top aides projected an unswerving confidence that the outbreak would be readily contained.

There would be cases, they repeatedly said, but New York’s hospitals were some of the best in the world. Plans were in place. Responses had been rehearsed during “tabletop” exercises. After all, the city had been here before — Ebola, Zika, the H1N1 virus, even Sept. 11.

“Excuse our arrogance as New Yorkers — I speak for the mayor also on this one — we think we have the best health care system on the planet right here in New York,” Mr. Cuomo said on March 2. “So, when you’re saying, what happened in other countries versus what happened here, we don’t even think it’s going to be as bad as it was in other countries.”

But now, New York City and the surrounding suburbs have become the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, with far more cases than many countries have. More than 138,000 people in the state have tested positive for the virus, with nearly all of them in the city and nearby suburbs.

From the earliest days of the crisis, state and city officials were also hampered by a chaotic and often dysfunctional federal response, including significant problems with the expansion of coronavirus testing, which made it far harder to gauge the scope of the outbreak.

Normally, New York would get help from Washington in such a time, as it did after Sept. 11. But President Trump in February and early March minimized the coronavirus threat, clashing with his own medical experts and failing to marshal the might of the federal government soon after cases emerged in the United States.

As a result, state and city officials often had to make decisions early on without full assistance from the federal government.

Even so, the initial efforts by New York officials to stem the outbreak were hampered by their own confused guidance, unheeded warnings, delayed decisions and political infighting, The New York Times found.

How Delays and Unheeded Warnings Hindered New York’s Virus Fight

Thought federal gvt was late to start, but after that i am impress with the Canadian gvt and in my case provincial gvt. Think that most provincial gvt are concerted...... We feel they are working together. It ain’t perfect but i am impress. Stay safe and happy you received your emergency money.

Still a lomg way to go but i am confident if WE all persue listening scientist and basic.....stay at home except for essential activities.

Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.

I started coming down with symptoms Monday night, except the fever.

Called my Doctor yesterday and he said to keep monitoring my temperature. Scheduled my testing for this morning and had it done. Now waiting for results.

Not sure how I may have contracted it (if I have) since I have been out once since March 22nd and followed every single rule out there.

And now I wait.

Stay safe everyone.

I think this is just wow.....

Arlington to hold socially distant memorial parade for Air Force nurse without kin - The Boston Globe

In a show of respect for an Air Force veteran who died without kin and in accordance with the social distancing requirements of life during coronavirus, the town of Arlington Wednesday will hold a memorial parade for resident Mary T. Foley.

Foley was 93 years old when she passed last Saturday and saw service overseas in the US Air Force for a decade, according to her online obituary and to town officials. She had no immediate relatives and because funerals - including formal military burials for veterans - are currently banned, town officials decided to hold a parade in her honor.

It’s scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at DeVito Funeral Home at 1145 Massachusetts Ave. and travel down Mass. Ave to Cambridge and then to the Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden where she will be interred.

"We are asking residents to line Mass. Ave (maintaining social distancing) on Wednesday, April 8th at 10:30 a.m. to acknowledge and thank Mary for her military service,'' Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine wrote to the town.

Arlington police will provide an escort.
