Look at the remaining teams, you need vets and not kids who only had 3 full years NHL exps, no matter how talented they are.
When 8 of your 12 forwards only played in the league for 3 yrs or less, you need more vets bc vets know they need to do all the little things beside skills to win.

I wonder if Petan will become Babcock's next version of Josh Leivo of always being a healthy scratch, even though Dubas signed him to a 2 year extension.

There might be similarities (lower line at ES but given PP opportunities). A difference might be Petan's ability to play centre, though he might be better suited to wing. The additions of Korshkov and Mikheyev should increase the competition for spots. On the other hand, Hyman's injury and any FA/trade departures from the forward group would also figure to open spots, even if only temporarily.

Third year in a row where we lacked a 4th line C. The other 2 years they had to trade for one. But Gauthier is not at all an answer going forward IMO.

We really need to start drafting some centre help. Gauthier was a terrible first round pick.

Boston also had a very good 4th line back in 2011.

I remember that Gauthier projected to be selected by Toronto in some mock drafts and the reality is with hindsight other players like Max Domi and Anthony Mantha (Who was selected ahead of Gauthier) were off the board.

Don't like that they are keeping this clown coach. He is perfect in his own little mind. It's everybody else's fault but his. I think that Dubas wanted to fire him but Shanahan did not approve. If so, I lost a lot of respect for Shanahan.

Lindholm was playing wing with Gauthier at center.

I think the smart thing to do and maybe they do it next year if he remains a regular player. That would be to play Gauthier on the PK. He was labelled the best defensive prospect to come out of the QMJHL in 20 years at the draft. His speciality wherever he has went was as a defensive specialist. Junior and the Marlies. He's good on draws too, he was at 53.7% this season. It's weird seeing Fred Gauthier with his low scoring ability in the NHL as a regular while not performing his special kill which is his penalty killing ability.

Yeah, I really don't get why we NEVER use goat as a penalty killer if responsible defensive play is supposed to be his MO. Even Kadri not killing penalties is puzzling since Babs loves using him as a matchup center. The fact that both of these players were left out in favor of wingers is even more confusing.

The Babcock narrative really emphasizes the lack of knowledge of today’s Leaf fan. Really embarrassing how the total lack of heart on the ice goes unnoticed.

So he trusts him to make trades, sign and re-sign players, over see both pro and amateur scouting, but he doesn't trust him on the coach?

That's an odd delineation of trust between the two.

My guess he made it look and feel like he was thinking about removing him to appease the frustrated part of the fan base. The whole smoke screen where he mentioned even his own job security with the "everyone will be reviewed" line which we know was going to come to anything.

But I don't think Babcock was really ever close to being fired TBN. Maybe because Shanahan has too much pride because he brought him here and was widely praised for doing so. Maybe because they can't get an adequate replacement no matter how much shouting from rooftops we hear about Keefe.

Either way, it does raise an issue I've been curious about for a while now and that's Shanahan's influence and management of these two which I'm not sure has been focused on enough. He went around big name hunting when putting the management and coaching staff together, but keeping it together will be interesting to watch.

Shanahan was also the one who brought Lou Lamoriello in as the GM in July 2015, however he had no problems not extending his contract after last season and naming Kyle Dubas as the new GM.

Sure, will find out if that was the right move. Some have made their mind up either way already though.

Lou always seemed like temporary move though and that seems like it was part of Shanahan's plan with him. Babcock isn't. Hence the 8 year deal and hype around bringing him here.

Maybe it also had to do with Lou's age since he was 73 years old at the time he was hired. Plus it's fair to say that Dubas and Hunter were not ready to become full time GM's at that time, so Shanahan needed an experienced GM.

Why was it bad for Pittsburgh when they won playing a skill based game?
Ryan Reeves.
Letang.
Crosby.
Malkin.
One tough guy.
3 skill guys who play tough.
We have Muzzin and Kadri.
Pitt did what they had to do to win.
No fear.
Our team?
Scared/Small/Timid/Embarrassing.

Ryan Reaves was never with them during the two cup runs. The Ryan Reaves trade is universally panned by Pens fans. They won by skill. I believe Matthews can play tough. So if Matthews or Tavares plays tough you are saying we can win the cup. Thats all it takes? Why don't you think Hyman plays tough?

That would really tick me off. But it would be a Babs move. Babs wanted Lindholm and Dubie traded him for Petan so Petan could be screwed. At some point Shanny will have to let Babs go. Clearly we are not there yet. So another season of his antics and one more playoff shot i guess. he can go with Marleau. Perhaps that would be fitting.
