The Town Fun Forgot
the bitterness from some posters here is borderline toxic. We're all disappointed he left, but is it possible to both feel let down yet not somber into such disdain for the guy who captained this team for many years and has given all he could while he did so? One false move should NOT taint his legacy/reputation forever. Hopefully most of the haters on here can get over it eventually and realize how important he still is to this town.

Don't presume we're all disappointed. I was over him after his comments during the Pittsburgh series. His leadership abilities have always been grossly exaggerated in my opinion.

Yup, by management, coaches and team-mates. Surely you have better insight than they would.

As suspected, Melnyk is a twit.

The Ottawa Senators’ inability to meet Daniel Alfredsson’s contract demands while also granting his request to add talent to the roster is a key reason the former captain is now a member of the Detroit Red Wings, team owner Eugene Melnyk revealed Friday.

In an exclusive interview with the Citizen, Melnyk said the team wouldn’t have been able to afford a player the calibre of Bobby Ryan — the Anaheim Ducks’ star forward the team dealt for hours after learning Alfredsson would sign elsewhere — and meet the numbers put forward by Alfredsson’s camp.

“You can’t have it both ways and say, ‘Well I want this for me, but I want you to do this with me and the team.’ It’s ‘which one do you want?’â€

Melnyk says he eventually told general manager Bryan Murray: “We won’t be able to spend that kind of money, so don’t promise that we’re going to bring anybody else in other than filling a hole that was there.â€

Asked if he was fine with the way negotiations went, he said: “I’m definitely OK with the way things happened. You can’t turn back the clock. Look, we play as a team, and no oe single player supersedes the betterment of the whole team.â€

The alfi sympathizers on this board are a disappointment at the least. I laugh at the article above, so now Murray lied when he told he tried to convince alfi to stay because they had Ricky bobby?
The posturing here makes me want to vomit. Simple fact is alfi is a millionaire that may have got his poor ego hurt for a second and ran to the next best thing.

Good riddance oh captain my captain. Now 17 years of losing makes sense. You're welcome back next year but Spezza is this teams new captain.

I remember posting on UFA day that the timing was fishy, and that the Ryan trade went forward because of cash freed up by not signing Alfie.

I have mixed feeling now that all of suspicions are confirmed. I hate the fact that Alfie and Ryan could not both be here because our team cannot get to the mid 50s in payroll. That sucks mostly because the cap is going up, and unless something changes we are going to have real trouble keeping out players as contract expire (and no, a casino does not solve this because it is a put money in Melnyk's pocket revenue stream rather than a hockey revenue stream).

On the other hand, Alfie is declining. He will be missed, especially his point per game pace in the playoffs and leadership during adversity, but he is not a $5 mill + player at this point in his career. Overpaying players does not help our team.

I'm sure that doesn't exactly inspire confidence among the Ottawa players in terms of their own salary demands and career progression.

We're back to the Bryden days again.

This.

It will start next year with Michalek, Lehner, & Conacher and get worse the following year with Ryan, Spezza, Methot & Zibby.

If the Sens can't afford to go above $55M then this team is destined for mediocrity or relocation.

Simple fact is Melnyk is also a multimillionaire. He could have afforded to give Alfie one more year after all the millions we've saved off Alfie in past contracts, and then paid for Ryan on top.

I think the problem was they told Alf take 3.5-4M for 1 year an d well still get Ryan. If we give you $5.5 or $6M ryan isnt coming. So if you wanna win here, U HAVE TO TAKE THE DISCOUNT. So alf decided F IT, im off to play on a cap max team.

I mean if the budget is $50M and the cap goes to $70M in 2014-2015 how can Ottawa compete longterm? How can we win with three $7M/yr type players missing every year?

Murray definitely told the media he informed Alfie the team was in discussion to trade for Ryan to help convince Alfie to stay.

Seems Melynk changed Murray's plan which of course is the owner's to prerogative.

The only think that bothers me about this is Melnyk's apparent attempt to make it look like Alfie was being selfish by asking for fair market value and improving the team.

IMO this confirms the Sens (Melnyk) wanted Alfie to take less than market to underwrite part of Ryan's contract.

This doesn't make the future look very bright, as I don't believe many of the current Sens players will be giving Melnyk hometown discounts in the future.

I think you have summed it up pretty accurately.

What Melnyk basically said in the interview, he couldn't afford to spend $1.5 -2M more to have both Ryan and Alfie, pretty sad financial picture.

There is little doubt in my mind the Sens are a cap floor team in the near future.

Well, as much as was liking Alfie, a 41 years old foward, averaging 45pts in the last three season (and this number will probably go down), worth 3,5mil/4,5mil max(exactly around what we give to MacArthur). But even that wasn't enough, Because Alfie also wanna play for a team that won't hesitate to spend to the roof if necessary, so he can have the cup (this is the selfish part).

The truth is that we now have a better and younger team to ice this year.

The thing that people keep forgetting is that even without alfredsson this team is 10x better than last years team. If he wanted to leave over $1 million, then he can take that $1 million and go **** himself in Detroit.

Exactly this. If you want the best chance to win a championship, year in and year out, you have to be willing to pay for it. Melnyk claims we can do the same thing with quality scouting & well run organization but that's not mutually exclusive with spending to the cap. He's happy to ice a "competitive" team, that's not the same thing.

I don't hate Alfreddsson for leaving, but I do hope the Red Wings fall on their faces this year. I also think Melnyk's a loudmouth cheapskate. No good guys here from my perspective.
