So Melnyk today confirmed that a main reason Alfie left was because the Sens wouldn't be able to bring in extra pieces if they re-signed Alfie.
Alfie asked for $X, AND then asked for someone else (just someone who could help) for $Y
Eugene did not have $Y
$X went to Ryan
Or maybe it was MacArthur vs Alfredsson, not Ryan
the bitterness from some posters here is borderline toxic. We're all disappointed he left, but is it possible to both feel let down yet not somber into such disdain for the guy who captained this team for many years and has given all he could while he did so? One false move should NOT taint his legacy/reputation forever. Hopefully most of the haters on here can get over it eventually and realize how important he still is to this town.
Don't presume we're all disappointed. I was over him after his comments during the Pittsburgh series. His leadership abilities have always been grossly exaggerated in my opinion.
The Ottawa Senators’ inability to meet Daniel Alfredsson’s contract demands while also granting his request to add talent to the roster is a key reason the former captain is now a member of the Detroit Red Wings, team owner Eugene Melnyk revealed Friday.
In an exclusive interview with the Citizen, Melnyk said the team wouldn’t have been able to afford a player the calibre of Bobby Ryan — the Anaheim Ducks’ star forward the team dealt for hours after learning Alfredsson would sign elsewhere — and meet the numbers put forward by Alfredsson’s camp.
“You can’t have it both ways and say, ‘Well I want this for me, but I want you to do this with me and the team.’ It’s ‘which one do you want?’â€
Melnyk says he eventually told general manager Bryan Murray: “We won’t be able to spend that kind of money, so don’t promise that we’re going to bring anybody else in other than filling a hole that was there.â€
Asked if he was fine with the way negotiations went, he said: “I’m definitely OK with the way things happened. You can’t turn back the clock. Look, we play as a team, and no oe single player supersedes the betterment of the whole team.â€
I'm sure that doesn't exactly inspire confidence among the Ottawa players in terms of their own salary demands and career progression.
We're back to the Bryden days again.
The alfi sympathizers on this board are a disappointment at the least. I laugh at the article above, so now Murray lied when he told he tried to convince alfi to stay because they had Ricky bobby?
The posturing here makes me want to vomit. Simple fact is alfi is a millionaire that may have got his poor ego hurt for a second and ran to the next best thing.
Good riddance oh captain my captain. Now 17 years of losing makes sense. You're welcome back next year but Spezza is this teams new captain.
wait, I thought Murray said he gave Alfie a blank check AND was going to swing the deal for Ryan???

I think the problem was they told Alf take 3.5-4M for 1 year an d well still get Ryan. If we give you $5.5 or $6M ryan isnt coming. So if you wanna win here, U HAVE TO TAKE THE DISCOUNT. So alf decided F IT, im off to play on a cap max team.
I mean if the budget is $50M and the cap goes to $70M in 2014-2015 how can Ottawa compete longterm? How can we win with three $7M/yr type players missing every year?
Murray definitely told the media he informed Alfie the team was in discussion to trade for Ryan to help convince Alfie to stay.
Seems Melynk changed Murray's plan which of course is the owner's to prerogative.
The only think that bothers me about this is Melnyk's apparent attempt to make it look like Alfie was being selfish by asking for fair market value and improving the team.
IMO this confirms the Sens (Melnyk) wanted Alfie to take less than market to underwrite part of Ryan's contract.
This doesn't make the future look very bright, as I don't believe many of the current Sens players will be giving Melnyk hometown discounts in the future.
I'm sure that doesn't exactly inspire confidence among the Ottawa players in terms of their own salary demands and career progression.
