Russia: Ovechkin played through 'pain numbing injections'
TSN.ca Staff

Alexander Ovechkin will not play in the world hockey championship due to a lower-body injury, Team Russia announced Thursday.

In a statement, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation said Ovechkin told Russian coaches he finished the NHL playoffs playing through pain numbing injections.

"During a conversation with coaches, Alexander Ovechkin stated that he is ready to join the team immediately as he always does, but doesn't want to let the team down because he finished the NHL playoffs on pain numbing injections," the statement read.

Ovechkin was eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs when the Capitals lost 2-0 on Wednesday night in Game 7 of their second-round series.

He scored five goals and added three assists in 13 playoff games.

Ovechkin appeared to be injured in Game 5 of the Capitals first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He left in the first period of the game following a hard hit to the left knee from Nazem Kadri.

Kadri went low in an apparent attempt to deliver a hip-check on Ovechkin late in the first period Friday night, but ended up catching the left knee of the Russian star. Ovechkin was eventually helped off the ice, putting no pressure on his left leg as he went to the dressing room. He did, however, return for the second period.

Ovechkin scored three goals in the first four games of the first-round series, but only scored two goals over the remaining nine games.

This will be the first time Ovechkin has not participated in a World Hockey Championship since he has been in the NHL.

decided to make a new thread just on the fact that the ovechkin thread should be about his overall play

So he basically couldn't feel his body??

No I think he was just getting local painkillers probably right into his knee. Very possible he had some kind of partial tear that would cause pain, inflammation, and weakness but not get much worse right away without severe trauma and he went for the painkiller route.

So the *******s that criticized him for coming back out to play after going to the locker room were probably watching a guy who just had a doctor shoot him up so he could return and compete. Any time you see a guy nearly die on the ice/field/court and he comes running back out after going to the locker room, he's probably had a similar treatment. But years of doing this takes its toll...

Yeah it looked like the RG3 injury after Kadri kneed him.

Maybe he gets surgery and goes on LTIRement and all the pens fans on here masquerading as caps fans get their wish.

He played nearly the same way for most games of the season. Was he injured all along?

That's what I'm wondering, anyone watching regularly sees the loss of mobility....

I'll say this, I've never seen Ovy go down to the ice after being hit more than this year. He used to be near immovable.

Ovechkin has been getting slower and clumsier every year since 2009, I don't blame the injury.

Fwiw the Russian coach called ovie injury a significant knee injury

Lets say Ov was injured in the World Cup. We know Carlson was and it messed his entire season. Ov's ice was being managed from the get go. He was not hismself all season. Lets see if he is ready to start next season.

Typically, big men don't age well in hockey.

Typically big men develop later. Ovechkin's favorite player growing up and who he patterned his game after was Owen Nolan. He was still effective when he retired at 38. Knuble was how old? Joe Thornton is how old?

I would be pretty surprised to find that "don't age well" translates to 50 goals in a 40 goal league one year and over the hill and useless the next.

Lets be honest here. In all the years 8 has been in the NHL we have not really seen him injured. Its not that he hasn't been. He plays thru it and we don't know about it. If he has the Chris Clark, Tom Poti, Karl Alzner, Brooks Laich groin crud, then maybe, but I think there is enough evidence that its his knee.

Typically, big men don't age well in hockey.

Jagr, Andreychuk, Roberts, Chara... there's plenty. Francis was pretty tall, Messier and Howe had good size and played big, Claude Lemieux was around 220 at his beefiest, Modano was tall and had good weight to him, Murphy was pretty big, Mario played at 40 and was very big. Shanahan, Bourque (thick, not tall), Rob Blake, Kjell Samuelsson was huge, Sean O'Donnell, Brodeur, Burke.

All those guys played at 40+ and were big dudes.

Ovi is 31. He also has zero significant injury history. And he literally played over 18 minutes yesterday. How hurt could he really be?

In light of this, if he's REALLY hurt, do you think RMNB will change the name of their site?

Russian Machine Sometimes Breaks But Not So Bad That He Misses Games...? RMSBBNSBTHMG.com?

And what happens if all the trade-him-now hysteria comes true?

Russian Machine Never Breaks But Plays In San Jose Now So Why Are We Still Covering The Caps...? RMNBBPISJNSWAWSCTC.com?

They should come up with an alternate meaning for the abbreviation...

I'm a pretty big and strong guy who's still athletic and as you get older soft tissue injuries are a real ***** to pin down. You don't want to stop your activities and as a pro athlete you can't. So you don't get adequate recovery time, which needs to increase as you age.

Then various injuries can compound AND they have different effects and intensities on any given day or in any given movement. Maybe you can sprint but you can't jump. Maybe you can move in a straight line but a particular cut causes a joint to give out and you have pain/weakness for a while before it settles and isn't the same for a few days/weeks. Maybe one day you feel good but the next time out your legs are dead. Maybe you have 90% mobility in a wrist or elbow or shoulder but that ONE little movement is like being stabbed.

There are a LOT of variables and scenarios and it's never really black and white. You're hurt, you're not 100% or even 80%, but you can function and power through it. Especially if you're a world class athlete and your 80% is better than just about anyone else. But you're also consciously or subconsciously aware of it and it changes the way you play.

So yeah, it's entirely possible that age and some lingering, nagging injuries that may even be YEARS old have been plaguing Ovechkin in the regular season, but then the Kadri hit made things much, much worse. In fact I'd say it's very likely.
