Russia: Ovechkin played through 'pain numbing injections'
TSN.ca Staff
Alexander Ovechkin will not play in the world hockey championship due to a lower-body injury, Team Russia announced Thursday.
In a statement, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation said Ovechkin told Russian coaches he finished the NHL playoffs playing through pain numbing injections.
"During a conversation with coaches, Alexander Ovechkin stated that he is ready to join the team immediately as he always does, but doesn't want to let the team down because he finished the NHL playoffs on pain numbing injections," the statement read.
Ovechkin was eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs when the Capitals lost 2-0 on Wednesday night in Game 7 of their second-round series.
He scored five goals and added three assists in 13 playoff games.
Ovechkin appeared to be injured in Game 5 of the Capitals first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He left in the first period of the game following a hard hit to the left knee from Nazem Kadri.
Kadri went low in an apparent attempt to deliver a hip-check on Ovechkin late in the first period Friday night, but ended up catching the left knee of the Russian star. Ovechkin was eventually helped off the ice, putting no pressure on his left leg as he went to the dressing room. He did, however, return for the second period.
Ovechkin scored three goals in the first four games of the first-round series, but only scored two goals over the remaining nine games.
This will be the first time Ovechkin has not participated in a World Hockey Championship since he has been in the NHL.
