That play right there is Shea Weber in a nutshell. I've said it from day one, the Habs made up like bandits with that trade.
The only reason the trade is looking good now is because Lindsey Vonn has a mysterious association with her romantic partner becoming rather unproductive in his craft while the relationship is on.

Subban did give Nashville returns and something to cheer about his first year there; things Nashville never did while Weber was there.

That Niskanen hit to Gally's mouth should be reviewed by the league. Same with the crosscheck to the face of Evans. No excuse for using your stick on someone's face like that.

Weber is like an angry statue, they shouldn't be that chicken. Sounds like Therrien, Vigneault, and Yeo put their stamp on the Flyers. I just hope we have enough goals to eliminate their trash hockey.

I wonder who is the new Bouillon for them.....
Yeah three players avoiding any contact with Weber behind his own net to pressure him just reminded me so much of the Therrien days and how soft the team was despite being a “grinding team.” It was hilarious.

Hudon was one of the few forwards able to knock a Flyer Dman off the puck on the fore check. He stays.
If he stays then at least make him the shooter on the half boards on the 2nd PP. He fills the net in the AHL on the PP from there and has a rocket of a shot. Domi cannot put it on net and the should have KK there on PP 1.

Question is would have they gotten that far with Webber .. I believe so. Better question is if they would have won the cup even .. I think not but still not a question. Bottom line you can state that this trade was good because it allowed them to be in the finals. There were other parts added after that also contributed.

Therrien was a man of contradictions, or perhaps more accurately, incoherence.

No puck possession, but no true defensively-oriented system. He basically promoted anti-offense, a crap PP, and blind chicken defense. The breakout was a regression from Martin as well. Rather than short passes to skate out of the zone with Martin, it became just "rim it up the boards and pray we win a board battle".

Oh, and that "in-the-lockeroom" video where he says "grind the puck, grind the puck". Those are the vaguest instructions ever.....

Yeo, I don't think any of us know too well, but the anecdotes from Minny and St. Louis boards indicate that there's always a crash with his teams.

And Vigneault was gifted talent on Vancouver but Boston got in their heads and took them out. Somehow, losing Aaron Rome was enough to mess him up.....

That link is not confirming that Gallagher has a broken jaw. It’s merely reprising the rumor as posted by Lavoie. We’d need another source with an official announcement.

Will they even make such an announcement at this juncture? have to think that if Gally will sport a cage that will pretty much say it all.

One of the more entertaining games I have watched in a long time.

Leave it to the refs to create drama.

Cause, clearly, a hockey team is all about ONE individual...
Nashville couldn't get rid of Subban's contract quick enough last summer. Let's call it like it is; People were saying Weber would fall off the face of the earth in a matter of months after we got him. 4 years later, and he's still as effective as he was back when he first came in.

No, they wouldn't have. Weber was less beneficial than Subban and it showed up even when talents like Forsberg were in front of Weber. A cursory look at stats shows that Weber produced far less offense for his team than Subban did in the playoffs, and without goals, you don't go far deep in the playoffs.

Subban-Ekholm was the shutdown pair. One thing Subban had was a "boost effect" on his partner. You could put him with a Gorges, a Gill, or a even a small garbage player like Bouillon, but he'd still bring his game and D to the table. But he could also mesh with a skilled like Markov as well. Weber doesn't have that level of versatility. He works best if his partner is the passer.

Josi-Weber
Ekholm-Ellis
would have been the configuration had Weber stayed. Josi-Weber vs Josi-Ellis is a wash probably. But Ekholm-Ellis would have been much worse than Ekholm-Subban. Competent, but not elite shutdown.

When the player can turn one defensive pair that used be good into a shutdown pair for defense in the playoffs. That's a major impact.
When the player is more productive offensively than the guy who left, that's another major impact.

We haven't been a playoff team since Weber's first year. We're only a playoff team this year because of circumstance via a pandemic, although kicking out the Penguins was the work of the team.

The trade is still pretty much a wash at this point. This team is still lacking in offense and by the time we get the pieces, Weber will lose a step or two. He is a deceptively decent skater, so if he loses a step, it actually does matter.

Use being a poor team has nothing to do with Weber being on that team. In fact, with Subban, not only would we be an even worse team right now, but the next few years would look even worse.

It does, because Weber usually needs a little skating and passing from his partner. We just happened to nuke our LDs in various ways soon after getting Weber...and it's been a glaring issue and major cause of our poor seasons......
