Adopting NBA Rules

Not sure what that rule actually entails but from the brief point you gave, sounds dumb as hell. There's a cap for a reason.
MLB doesn't have a cap. But they instituted the luxury tax to prevent teams from spending excessive amounts.

NBA is stupid. They have the soft cap, the hard cap, and the luxury tax instituted. The soft cap is used so that you can spend over the cap for things like mid level exceptions and rookie contracts and veterans (bunch of complicated contract stuff). Hard cap is the cap before luxury tax. So you can spend up to I think $119 million before the luxury tax kicks in. It's all really stupid.

Something like a luxury tax might make sense. The system is not equal right now with some states providing great taxation rates versus others. Clearly money is not valued the same way if you go to team to team, you either need to come up with an individual salary cap for each team or implement a luxury tax.

No the NHL should not because this would help richer teams gain a advantage making the NHL go back somewhat to before the salary cap.

I would prefer some flexibility. Particularly a system that allowed teams to exceed the cap to re-sign their own players to some degree but not to acquire free agents or traded assets.

The NHL should adopt this only if the NBA adopts the NHL's awful loser point system for games that go to overtime. If one league adopts the other's bad idea, the other should do the same.

Soft caps and renegotiable contracts suck and I say this as a fan of a team that would benefit from spending beyond the cap and has some albatross contracts.

I think soft caps/luxury taxes are a joke. Why have a cap if you go over it with a number of exceptions and trade loopholes?

Just set a number and tell every team they can't go over it.

NHLPA would never agree to this. Other than that, having a cap is great for the league. Just because Pens, Kings and Hawks have won a lot of cups, doesn't mean cap sucks.

This has been asked a million times and the answer is always no. And before more Leaf fans chime in about how they hate the cap, if there was no cap then there is no Matthews in Toronto. The cap forced the Leafs to embrace a rebuild instead of continually trying to buy a cup.

It's stupid, you shouldn't be able to buy your way to a cup.
