another of Oates things. He really didn't want Ovechkin hitting. He really don't want the forwards hitting that much. He apparently wanted them skating and taking away space.
I think one of the reasons we didn't see Wilson playing above the 4th line was that Oates didn't want Wilson hitting and really didn't want him fighting. Wilson said as much. IIRC he said something along those line on fighting after Wey got beat up.
I'm pretty sure the push to get Ovechkin to tone it down goes back to 2010 with Gabby, Knuble, the suspension by the league for the hit on Campbell, and pressure from the media and other sources. Ovechkin was probably more prone to suggestion due to the Olympic disappointment and the increasing injury issues which were being kept secret.
That's not to say Oates wasn't an idiot who overthought every aspect of the game, including physicality.
