That, for what it's worth, is a significantly greater gap than had been discussed. Caps had offered ~$5.5 mil in talks, Holtby asked ~$6.5.

Both sides fine with long-term deal of 5-6 years. Hasn't been the issue.

Just give him the 5/6-year $6.25M deal we were all expecting and be done with it!

So, as I said last week, it wasn't about term. It was about money. Gmbm was emphasizing term and total. It's the AAV that's the sticking point, and possibly backloading.

This is a tough one.

As a team...do you commit that kinda term to a goalie and perhaps give him more coin closer to what he wants to get that deal done? Or take it to arbitration...get a favorable shorter contract...and chance losing him after that time if he performs on the same level as this past season?

He hasnt won anything yet...he's good...but really...is he THAT good?

Tough spot to be in as a GM. That being said...a #1 goalie just doesn't fall out of the sky.

I think you give it to him, he's proven he can compete. Who else would we find out there to fill his role for less?

I don't doubt Grubs can become a #1 goalie in the future so maybe the risk of taking the arb and getting the short deal pays off if grubs can take the reins then. We do have some goalie studs in the pipeline.

He's singlehandedly won 2 playoff series in the past 3 years -and he did just about everything reasonably possibly to make that 4.

IMO the decision is whether you want to keep and pay a top 5 goaltender or whether you want to try to compete with a middle of the pack goalie.

As much as I like Holtby, I'm kind of in the 2nd camp.

8 mil per year? Thats a hell of a reach.

I don't keep tabs on NHL player contracts like I do for NFL players, but a quick search showed that Devan Dubnyk just signed a 6 year 25mil deal with Min. And Dubnyk finished ahead of Holtby in the Vezina voting. So what makes Holtby roughly worth 23mil more than Dubnyk? Age?

Taking at lot at the Top 15 goalies in the league (based on cap hit), I'm pretty comfortable with the idea of Holby earning $6.25-$6.5M per year. I'm not saying that all of the goalies below are worth but they're being paid, only that I'd happily pay Holby $6.25-$6.5M per year than take on half of the contracts below.

Player - Cap Hit - Salary
Henrik Lundqvist $8,500,000 - $10,000,000
Sergei Bobrovsky $7,425,000 - $8,500,000
Tuukka Rask $7,000,000 - $7,500,000
Pekka Rinne $7,000,000 - $7,000,000
Carey Price $6,500,000 - $7,000,000
Cam Ward $6,300,000 - $6,800,000
Cory Schneider $6,000,000 - $6,000,000
Ryan Miller $6,000,000 - $6,000,000
Corey Crawford $6,000,000 - $6,500,000
Ben Bishop $5,950,000 - $5,950,000
Semyon Varlamov $5,900,000 - $6,000,000
Kari Lehtonen $5,900,000 - $6,000,000
Jonathan Quick $5,800,000 - $7,000,000
Marc-Andre Fleury 5,750,000 - $5,750,000
Mike Smith $5,666,666 - $6,500,000

Many of these tweets seem contradictory.

basically all we really know is the two sides money files and that the caps are going for the one year deal so holtby an rfa again next year

doesnt he lose arbitration next year as he used it this year?

I think so but not 100% sure. His agent suddenly asking 8M is probably a response to realizing this, and likely being outmaneuvered. Holtby might then get his 6-6.5M this year and have to go through negotiations again next year. With 1 more RFA year and arbitration used up, I'm not sure what his options would be, other than to hope teams put down offers to jack up the price....?

It's a definite advantage for ownership, imo. You get Holtby at market price and another contract year incentive.
