Haven't watched any of the games or even highlights so not sure how Cal has actually looked. But I said after he was drafted he needed 3 years before he would be ready for the NHL and he is on track for that, should get a cup of coffee this year. He's been a slow starter before so I wouldn't be too worried. It took him a good month or two last year before he felt comfortable in the AHL then he looked like our best D on most nights. He might be the defensive version of Palat in that regard. I wasn't expecting him to make the team anyway so him not looking great isn't a concern, I hope they keep him up all the way through camp and get him more games, he needs to see that NHL speed and physicality so he knows what to work on.
Yeah. The concern with Foote, if it even is a concern, is that his skating hasn't improved all that much. At least not in ex games. Last night he looked like the worst skater on the team, and it's hard to imagine him in the NHL before that improves. I mean, that was always the case with him, I know, which is why I think it's a bit of a concern. Because it doesn't seem to have come as far as we, or at least I, would have hoped. Masin looked like he belonged much, much more in the games I saw. And I guess I'd just hoped Foote would have overtaken him by now.
All that said, I definitely think the AHL assessments are much more accurate than anything I--who will never have a scouting job, for good reason--might pick up in an exhibition game. So if reports are coming back that he's knocking on the door, I'll believe them.
But he really looks clumsy on skates. And kind of soft.
Not surprised to see Verheaghe looking good. Kid definitely should be on the team, much better offensively than anybody on our 4th line. He's really come a long way since we got him, worked hard on his weak areas and made himself an NHL caliber player. As for Barré-Boulet I wouldn't say he's just a PP specialist but I think he's been hyped way too much by sum. He did get a ton of PP points but he also did play with our best AHL forwards a lot too. He always had a Conacher, Andreoff or Verheaghe on the ice with him. You still need to finish your chances and he did so you can't take that away but he needs to show he can do it a bit on his own.
Verhaeghe has looked better than Volkov so far, IMO. Kind of a solid, balanced skillset (from what limited action I've seen), and instincts that Jon Cooper is going to like. Seems to make a lot of simple, but effective plays, but also has a skillset to make big plays when something opens up for him. Cirelli looks great right now, and Verhaeghe at 3C would allow us to use Cirelli as a top-six option, which might be critical if the Point situation drags out.
Weren't the reports on ABB always that he's an opportunistic scorer? Like, he's invisible, but then pops up to score a goal? So far we're only seeing the invisible part, but that's to be expected, I think.
Anyway. As always, Hose, I appreciate your insight.
