What's your excuse?
17-17-4 to finish the season gets us to 97pts, or just over the 6 in 5 line. That's a 97.9% chance of making the playoffs.

Let's put this in perspective.

Last year we finished 40-35-7. That's a better points percentage than we need to get to 97. If only count up to the last game before we finally cracked the 3 wins in a row streak, we would have exactly 35-35-7.

I think it might be time to stop looking at the playoff line, and start looking at what it would take to get home ice in the first round.

Jets play a rested team when tired three times. Tired teams play a rested Jets team seven times. Today's game is two tired teams.

True. Under the current division system, the highest amount of points for a non-playoff team was Boston's 96 in 14-15. What made that year so special was four teams finishing with under 70 points, and Carolina only beating that by one point. It would probably take half of the playoff teams finishing with under 70 points to render the 6 in 5 rule useless, and with the parity of today, I can't see that happening.

96pts has usually been enough to make the playoffs. No team that has finished with 98pts has ever missed.

Boston missed recently at 96 points. Only one time that I can find. A few have finished with 95 and missed. 95 points is safe the majority of the time. Nobody has missed finishing with 97 points or higher.

Yeah but all you have to do is look at our division and know that it's not gonna be anywhere near as safe this season. If central keeps up like this, you never know. What are the other teams in the division on pace for?

Eventually the central teams play each other and then the losses come. The probabilities are exactly what they are probabilities are. Every central team would have to pretty much go undefeated the rest of the way against every non division game for 103 points to somehow miss the playoffs.
