Very few D-men charge up the ice with the puck, I mean if you have Makar, that's one thing, but most D-men are taught to pass the puck for a good reason, the puck moves faster than you can skate. What makes most D-men effective is the vision to see the open man and the skill to hit his stick blade with the pass (and not his skates).Three quarters of the league doesn't skate like Sanheim. Doesn't mean you neuter the ability of your players. Look around the league and the majority of the teams out there don't hog tie players the way the Flyers do.
Clearly you don't watch Bonk because of you did, you would see that he's a superb puck handler, a must in the system used in London. Christ, Zadorov was a capable puck handler in London until that was coached out of him.
Development matters. Neutering a player's ability in order to fit an antiquated, outdated system is not a good development strategy.
Good offensive teams move the puck with quick, accurate passes that get the puck behind the defense and gives your forwards a chance for a clean entry before the defense can get back into position.
Of course, I'm old enough to remember Bobby Orr, if you have a D-man like that, you let him do whatever he wants to do.
