Almost cruel to make them play this game. Teams have motivation for 3rd place games (medal) and for relegation games (to stay up) but not much for a 5th place game. Kind of strange that they have this game to begin with.

Actually ends up being a big game for next year's groups, assuming Russia beats Slovakia for 3rd.

Next year's groups:

A: Gold winner (Can/Swe), Slovakia, 5th Place winner, +2 weak teams
B: Gold Loser (Can/Swe), Russia, 5th place loser, Finland, +1 weak team

I'd rather be in a group with Slovakia and two weak teams instead of Russia and Finland.

Hard to get a hockey team playing with passion on that kind of premise, though.

Not a meaningless game for US hockey, but a game that's got to be hard to convince the team to play hard for.

Yeah, it would be a good thing to finish 5th, because otherwise there could be a group containing Sweden/Canada, Russia and USA. The Americans will prob have a weaker team next year, so it would be preferred if they were in a group with say Canada, Slovakia, Finland and a Swiss/Austria.

The rest of the world will breathe a sigh of relief next year as Janus will be too old to play. In fact, Slovakia loses most of their team after tomorrow. Only 7 players will return from such a successful squad.

Group A Next Year Group B Next Year
Sweden Canada
Slovakia Russia
USA Czech
Two other teams

Assuming, Sweden, USA and Russia win their games.

Could you imagine if Canada loses, Russia loses and USA wins.....

Canada
Russia
USA

....in one group.

It could also be Sweden, Russia, USA in one group. There could actually be a group of death in hockey, lol.

I really hope that the USA comes out with some sort of motivation, it's been a bad WJC, but to finish in sixth place would be so extremely terrible. I see either a US team that comes out flying and blows out the Czech Republic 7-3, or the unmotivated weak team that they have shown they can be and they lose 5-1. It'll be one extreme or the other.

I wish this was being streamed somewhere :(

This. Though probably a function of lack of TV coverage. Can't believe the world is ignoring an international championship game between the USA and another legitimate contender, even if it is for 5th place.
