Im surprised at lack of Karlsson mentions.

He's among only 3 players in NHL history to have 2 Norris by age 25. With Potvin and Orr... and he hasn't even played on a contender yet.

Lidstrom
Karlsson
Crosby

Ovechkin/Crosby for sure and the 3rd is a ???... OV is best goal scorer of this generation and Crosby best player.

Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Karlsson and Toews all have strong cases.

Pleasantly surprised by the amount of Sedin mentions in this thread. Identical twins both being NHLers is cool on its own, but for both to have won scoring titles as linemates? Crazy.

Who were the top three players in the NHL in the 1963-64 season? Jean Beliveau, Gordie Howe, and Bobby Hull were the three Hart nominees. Does history judge George Armstrong, a Hall of Famer, to be as good as those three because he had just won his third straight Stanley Cup as captain of the Maple Leafs?

The thing that will make Ovechkin stick is he has lead the league in goals 5 times and counting, plus he's a three time Hart winner and a two time Hart runner up. Alex Ovechkin has scored more points than any other player in the NHL over the past 10 years including 10 years of Crosby's prime.

If people are still pretending secondary assists are just as good as goals 50 years from now, Crosby may be talked about nearly as much as Ovechkin.

After that there is a big drop off.

Yeah. Or for the matter Dave Keon, Frank Mahovlich, Tim Horton, and Allan Stanley. Put those guys in a poll that says vote for players you've heard of (no Leafs fans allowed or grandpas), and none of those guys are gonna be top three (well maybe Tim Horton but the reason is definitely not going to be related to hockey). This is despite being a dynasty team and playing in the supposed "center of the hockey universe".

From this era, I'm guessing 2010-2020, it's gonna be Crosby, Ovechkin and whatever superstar with lots of individual accolades like Karlsson, Keith, Malkin or maybe even McDavid down the road.

Bingo! Nobody else currently playing in the NHL is even in the conversation with Crosby and Ovechkin. McDavid appears to be the kind of player that will join them.
Am I the only one who has a hard time putting an 18 year old prospect ahead of players like Malkin, Stamkos, Toews, Kanes and even Kovalchuk for forwards. even know he's an oiler I'm starting to feel sorry for him.

At this rate anything less than ROTY and a stanley cup by year 2 he'll be a bust.

How many more points in how many more games? PPG is a more telling stat. Crosby hasn't had a horrible season yet either. If you count last season for Crosby as being horribler, then OV's had two.

Top 3 players however highest points total doesn't matter, we're talking about the archetype or style of current players, which 3 players represent this era (last decade) the best? Who has made enough difference in this era to be mentioned 50 years from now when you factor in prodigies that will emerge in the next 5 years? I believe the answer rests upon style of play as opposed to number of points.

Stats nerds will always talk about who is best among eras based on some stupid calculations on how their peers did, but I don't care about that in this thread. Style of play. 50 years from now. Who is mentioned? All I know is, Datsyuk will be mentioned by historians. Possibly Ovy too. I feel McDavid will wash out Crosby's accomplishments.

Why don't you just say you don't like Crosby and save yourself some time?

Nowhere near the players that deserve it, except for Crosby, but history awards the ones with the loudest fans.

By defining this era last decade it rules out this year draftees meaning no McDavid or Eichel and so on.

Also not enough time for some to get accolades unless cheat from future, example being Karlsson who would need more time to get top three imo.

Crosby and Ovechkin would be best guesses. Sedin have good chance of being third with twin aspect and how good both are. All three/four match rather well to start of period as well (if we take lockout as start). Biggest contender to Sedin would be Subban I think. Who certainly would not however in my opinion despite named here are Stamkos, Datsyuk and the likes.

It depends on what hockey history considers an "era" in 50 years. Definitely the start of an "era" will be the end of the 05 lockout. When will this era "end"? Will it have ended with the last lockout already? Then it is Sid and Ovechkin with Malkin in third. And this era is not worth discussing because it has not unfolded. If it ends last season and 3-3 OT is the start of an era... Maybe Toews replaces Malkin? If the era starts in 05/06 but ends in 10 years, say when Ovy and Crosby retire... It is Ovy, Crosby still and maybe Karlsson or MacDavid... But that is projecting the future too much. Tavares might win 3 scoring titles? Stamkos might start winning 4 or 5 Richards if Ovechkin slows diwn and no one fills the vacuum. It is impossible to predict now.

Keith is not a guy that will be remembered in 50. He just isn't that kind of polarizing figure, even if he's one of the best.

Toews
Chara
Crosby
Datsyuk
Subban
Ovechkin

Since when is Keith a polarizing figure?
He is arguably the most important player for the Hawks.

In 50 years from now, people will remember Crosby and Ovechkin for sure. The 3rd player has yet to be determined.
