I doubt that has anything to do it, but rather the amount of money he wants.

Out of respect for a traded former teammate, Rielly should stick with #44 until it's official that Franson is not returning when signs a new deal with a team other than the Leafs.

So, if Franson doesn't return to the Leafs this summer, Rielly can have #4 to start next season.

Yes he did and I remember that because I went to Leetch's first game as a Maple Leaf when he was wearing the #2.

They do, as an example of a player switching without the pre-cursor of a trade Kubina switched from 73 to 31 like 1/4 of the way through the season. His old number in Tampa was 13 but someone more important had that here.

Gretzky's idol as a kid was Gordie Howe who wore #9, and so Gretzky chose #99 cuz he wanted to be twice as good.
