Malkin rounding back into form dramatically changes the outlook of this team. Malkin returning to form definitely means the 2nd line is returning to form and very likely means that the powerplay is returning to form as well.

This team still has its flaws, but the core playing like they should be playing alone makes this team a safe playoff team.

Kap really got lost in the shuffle in Toronto, huh?

Exactly what JR and others would happen, has happened. Give him the top 6 slot and he will produce like a top 6 wing. Chuggin along at a mere 62pt/82gp pace. Not too shabby for $3.2mil.

I mean Tanev isnt an elite scorer but I think hes a great 3rd liner and on the PK. Maybe I,m missing something but he is creating alot of chances and backchecking.

When hes on the ice he looks like one of the fastest guys out there. Ya his contract is kind of mehh but you need guys like that on the squad.

The only problem with that line is they don't have a good trigger man. They have speed. They cycle well, just rarely ends in a shot.

Like the line tho... just can't score if you don't shoot.

I see why coaches get mad at Kap... but it's dead wrong. Kap seems like a guy similar to Kessel that doesn't let hockey ruin his life. He plays hard but doesn't seem like a guy who dwells on a loss. And the old school doesn't get it. He's a terrific talent. I have seen him lazily finish some plays like Toronto players did but if you watch any game you will see that.
I think as long as he's skating, he's fine. When Sullivan benched him earlier in the season, he wasn't skating. He was flat-footed a lot, wasn't pressuring like normal on the forecheck. He's been full tilt since. Has he made mistakes? Sure. But you notice Sullivan hasn't cut his minutes back because of the mistakes. It was the effort Sullivan wanted.

Seriously. @ColePens. Watch the replay. Watch Kapanen. You knew the second he hit center ice and it was a 3 on 1 that he was passing it. Payback for all the chances Geno has given him. So unselfish.

I keep saying it that he's way more creative than anyone gives him credit for. He doesn't play a full system style game. He creates and that pisses some of these awful NHL coaches off because they want full control.

The issue is that with Tanev on the ice, the Penguins don't really do anything. It's just eating away minutes.

It's the same problem as last year. Sure, it's great that they're good defensively, but they did so little offensively that they ended up a wash. You're really relying on your top-6 winning games for you if your bottom-6 is structured to draw even at best.

He is playing a little different game with Malkin, more of a set-up than shooter. On his own line he was driving play..I think he would be better there but I like the chemistry with Geno.

Apparently there were legs to the theory that part of the issue was Malkin didn't have his legs, pun intended.

BTW, IF one were inclined to say the Malkin-Zucker combo gets a bad rap, then one could say Malkin didn't entirely have his legs in the playoffs either (not like earlier in the season). I don't buy that so much, because I think it's just two players who are oil and water through no faults of their own, but I added this in the interest of fairness.
