Last season, the Avs certainly just wasted that year. There wasn't even a real attempt.MacFarland pissed away two years of the Cup window.
This year by not addressing the worst goaltending situation in the league and last year for refusing to use Landy's LTIR cap relief to add depth scoring and reinforcements at the deadline.
This season though, IMO, the Avs were aggressive and made moves. Sometimes it just doesn't work and you have to reflect on why it didn't work (clearly George), but most certainly CMac tried to address this team's needs. He made moves in the summer to shore up the team. Then got busy near the deadline too. Mitts, Colton, Walker, Duhamie, Trenin, and Jones are all here within the last year. That's 2 middle 6 centers, a top 4D, two bottom 6 winger and an extra defensemen just through trades. Through signings he brought in Drouin (though I'd say a lot of credit to MacK here), Wood, and Parise. A guy who earned his way into the top 6 and 2 bottom 6 wingers. Not all have worked perfectly or will work for years into the future... but that is a lot of work done in a year and the team is very clearly better for it. He did fall short on goaltending, and it may sink the season. But at least he tried this season and overall did a great job. The Avs are a much better team this April compared to last April.
I'd be much more upset if they didn't do anything. They tried to put a good team together and mostly accomplished it. I'm much happier to try and fail than to not try at all.
Now he has the task of building that bottom 6 depth and goaltending this summer. It won't be an easy task.
