I hope they're not quick to trade this 1st away because I think the talent in the mid 1st round area of this draft class is very good. Specifically Brandsegg Nygaard, Artamonov and Boisvert are three guys that I'm very high on that would all be great fits.
Center seems pretty rough in that area though, and we desperately need some actual centers. Boisvert fits the bill, but not much else in that area

Obviously center depth is a problem but I think the biggest overall need is adding players that can play a 200ft game. I'm not going to pass up a player like Brandsegg Nygard that checks a lot of boxes that the Devils need just because he isn't a center.

i have not been looking forward to seeing this thread pop up (as much as i like following the draft) but i cant disagree with the timing lol

i wouldnt describe the 2024 class as my favorite. the russians/whl kids look strong again, and we have a handful of top end ncaa players this year, but its pretty light out of the qmjhl (per usual), sweden, and even the usntdp, which is weird since conversely i think its a better than average ushl class. i dont think the ohl group is that great either (comparatively speaking to what they normally put out) though theyve trended better as of late

im concerned about star power coming out of this draft, particularly up front. i also dont see a lot of great C options as you go down the board, unfortunately. they exist (hage, luchanko, boisvert, pettersson, etc.) but youre kinda crossing your fingers a bit on their outlook. now, theres plenty of interesting defensive projects, some of which could break really well, but i think theyll need strong developmental systems to tie everything together, even at the top end. board-favorite steve kournianos said it best the other day when he mentioned it felt like a draft where a defender taken outside the 1st round will have the best career

the one positive, though, is i think the draft has a lot of smart, solid compete, and even interior-focused middle 6 upside pieces. no one who makes or breaks the roster, but could help elevate a line and really feed off a jack or nico. iginla, who i doubt will be available for our pick, would add great scoring, pace, and forechecking. i wouldnt get wrapped up in projecting him like his father, but i do see a lot of hagel in him. artamonov has been very impressive as well. larionov is a more kid-friendly coach with torpedo (which helps to explain his role) but he certainly hasnt looked out of place, regularly outworking and outthinking khl level talent. players like chernyshov and sennecke you have to squint a little to see what they could turn out to be long term, but the former combines size/skill/skating with good vision and a 200ft effort, and the latter showcases some exceptional awareness and handling while likely being a ways away from a final product given a recent (and dramatic) growth spurt. luchanko as previously mentioned is a high motor, high IQ player who could likely mesh with anyone. parasack is toffoli-esque with his elite anticipation and ability to park himself in scoring lanes. basha is in the mold of a brindley or konecny from prior years, very high pace and creative offensively

i could keep going. like i said, i dont really love the class, but theres no shortage of fill-in checking line options who could be available at our pick (if we retain it i suppose lol), and i think more than usual this will be a year where you really want your team to be good at developing players. ill be interested to see if/how many players close out the season with a strong enough step forward to take themselves out of our range

I wish in hindsight that Fitz thought to add to this year's pick conditions in the Meier trade that if we miss the playoffs there is no pick at all. I'm feeling a little shell-shocked with this team often paying for things later when it hurts us. We need to stock up on centers and goaltender prospects; not having a 2nd rounder hurts that. Meier hasn't exactly lit it up here either.

And we're still paying Kovalchuk's recapture penalty next year. What a world we live in.

Is next year the last year we pay it?

Yes, finally. I know it's $250k, but the guy literally came back to the NHL and retired again since this was put on our cap. It should have come off when he returned to the NHL. F that guy.

Schneider and Kuokkanen come off this year.
man...

We're FINALLY at the end of the f'n road with that guy.

Basically paid him to simply exist for so many years (good work if you can get it).

And wait...CORY Schneider? I did not know were still on the hook for him.

Looks like we'll have a ton of money coming off the books this offseason.

(and that's if Fitz doesn't do any panic moves from now until the end of the season)

We weren’t paying him, that was the penalty for his salary being higher than his cap hit before he retired.

Haven't been as into this draft class, but do find it interesting that two top 15 guys have ties to San Diego.

Feels like Buium's trajectory is going up. Seems like he's grown a couple inches in the past 18 months and he's listed at 6'2 now. His older brother (Wings pick) is listed at 6'4.

Trevor Connelly will be an interesting one unfortunately for off ice reasons. On the surface it seems like it was a stupid teenage decision. But I've read rumblings that certain teams have already decided to avoid drafting him.

------

One guy I'm gonna look more into is Liam Greentree who seems like a polarizing guy. Proponents compare him to Jason Robertson in his draft year, big/skilled/clumsy.

I didn't even know the draft was in Vegas this year, it might be worth going to

I earmarked that weekend, although I'm dreading how much they're going to list tickets for.

I haven't been to Vegas since 2018 when the Caps won the cup, funny enough I saw the Caps players show up to the club I was at that night with friends. Wanted to visit for a Devils v Vegas game but I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a draft there and exploring again. Really fun city to get away to. That + Prague trip to start 24/25 are definitely trips I'm keeping an eye on.

Vegas is an easy enough flight for me. I've been on the fence about going to the St. Patrick's Day game. Ideally I would fly in Sunday morning, catch the game, and stay through Monday night. Part of me is just paranoid that a flight delay would cause me to miss the game. Debated flying in late Saturday and pulling an all nighter, but I think I've reached the age where I can't do that any more. I did that in 2019 and was regretting that decision around 4am.
