Maybe if Monty had actually worked out the pairs post deadline they would have had a better result. The D was all on Monty. The one position you need consistency for is D
It’s been the same issue with the D for longer than Monty ,they can’t handle the physicality they panic and throw the puck away because they’re afraid of getting hit. They can’t clear the front of the net if they’re lives depended on it ,they’re to small and not physical enough. They really only have two good defenceman, and I have doubts in them after the last few playoffs.

If someone is on the board that they love in the second round I could see them making a move with Gryz

If Sweeney doesn't re-sign Bertuzzi he should be fired. He went all in and failed. At the very least sign your best player in the playoffs to save face. We are looking at not having any of the 3 back (Bertuzzi/Orlov/Hathaway) and no draft capital for years. What a disaster!

Defense looked fine from the TDL to the start of the playoffs.....but suddenly they forgot how to play defense once the playoffs started.

I think McLovin is going to really challenge for a spot but I think Merkulov needs another half season in Providence at least. I expect Lauko and Steen to challenge as well.

I will be pissed if the Providence guys come in flat again like they did last year.

No way they get a 2nd for Gryz without Adding picks to the deal
Lauko should be with the Bruins from day 1, he earned it with his play last year, furthermore they really need his speed.

No no, he went all in and the team failed. He gave them all the weapons he could to make a serious run and capture a cup.....and the team failed.

When you say “ain’t the answer” on Lysell and Merkulov, what exactly does that mean? For this season or in general?
For this season with Lysell, he needs to get stronger, stop cutting across center ice with his head down, even in 2023 that will get you a concussion, and his play away from the puck and compete both need improvement. I think calling him up now, much like Lohrei, would hurt his future potential. I am still spilt on his high end. I am not sure if he is a top 6 forward or a 3 line winger with speed but using him this year in the NHL will probably make jim a future KHL star.

Merkulov I do not think is or ever will be ready, I could be wrong about him but he just screams very good AHLer to me.

I have seen a bit more of Lysell than Merkulov but I just feel neither will be ready this year in anyway and Merkulov may never be ready. With the very small set of prospects they have that may be capable of playing top 6 minutes, like Lysell, I just feel bringing them along slowly is a better move than putting them into what could be a very, very mediocre team.

Would rather they hold off on Gudas until after Looch has a chance to beat the hell out of him
That is what training camp is for.

I hope they move him and get some needed assets. Imo they'll be fine without him

Elliotte Friedman had this to say about Sweeney, Ullmark,

" I gotta think there’s a decent chance one of those two goalies is going somewhere.”

“The way Sweeney talked, he didn’t sound optimistic, and sometimes at this time of year, I just have trouble deciding if that’s real or it’s ‘this is what we want people to think?”

“Again, they’re looking at Hellebucyk. If the Boston goalies are available, I’m sure they’re talking to them too. There are a lot of goalies out there. I think a lot of people are watching to see what Boston does there.”

I have always been very critical of Sweeney but he did what he should have last year, the D, Monty, goaltending and Bergeron playing when he should have been in an iron lung cost them, not Sweeney who gave them every chance to win.

The glory days of hockey, eh?
Camp was a bit different in the 80's.

I would be surprised if Gryz is traded (by himself) today. What would be the point?

The B’s are already under the cap with a full roster, and they’re not going to sign a top4 UFA to take his place for less than what he makes.

Even if the plan is to replace him with a second-chance/discount bin UFA like OEL, wouldn’t it make more sense to sign that guy before trading away Gryz?
The bruins would have to buyout reilly and forbort to fill out the roster. which leaves them with a nearly 3mil penalty next year. I dont see that being ideal (trading a bonus overage for a buyout hit) Ideally one of the three is traded and one of the three is bought out. the last is a LHD on the roster

Crazy to me that there are some who still blame Sweeney.

Blame those precious players we all love so much for this collapse. Blame the coaching.

Sweeney did his job, and now he has to deal with the fallout because the PLAYERS FAILED.

Sweeney talked about looking for second chance guys, and if he doesn’t move anyone, they’ll have to sign guys willing to accept $2m or less, so yeah, that leaves you guys like Wood and Bellows, maybe an OEL or Pacioretty reclamation project with bonuses.
I think Max Comtois and Caleb Jones are both interesting options for cheap 2nd chancers who arent getting qualified. could have middle six and 2nd pair potential (I do forget sometime in my doom and gloom that the bruins have 3 1st line wingers and 2 no1 defensemen some times :p )

As was preseason. As were games when they became out of hand. So many missing elements in the modern game.
Have you ever read Open Net by George Plimpton? He played goal briefly in a Bruin/Flyers preseaon game that is legendary for the number of fights that took place. Cherry's Lunch pail AC vs The Broad Street Bullies and both teams called up some minor league tough guys to fill out the rosters. He goes over it a bit as when the mayhem was occurring he was giving a press conference about his time in net. Nice look at the Cherry era team.

I didn’t watch hockey in the 90’s but I listened to Jagr on Spittin Chicklets and I thought it was interesting he said the 2013 Bruins was the toughest team he played on. They’ve cut back fighting a lot in the last ten years alone. Great interview too, love Jagr.

Early thoughts

- At this time Boston with existing D core & goalie tandem continue to be the best defensive team in the league and the plan is to keep it that way with the exception of potentially moving a goalie.

- Boston will be patient finding a center replacement giving prospects, Zacha, and Coyle the opportunity to play top lines.

- Lucic back simply for nostalgic reasons. ... thinking he should be retiring ... hoping he can contribute, it would be sad to see this board treat him with disrespect.

- Sweeney went for it and for good reason. Injuries were too much to overcome. I trust Sweeney will do well to keep the team competitive.

- Bergeron will be back but it will be a late return date.
My money is on #37 retiring and if you think you will be looking at the same team defensively with no #37, #46 and even #71 you are fooling yourself. Not only are their GF going to take a big hit, their GA is going to jump also.

Your asking for big trouble if Coyle and zacha is 1 and 2. Big trouble.

Yup. As much as I love Coyle, he's not a #1C or a #2C except in an injury situation. Thanks to his work with Patrice his FO% was much improved but at age 32 he is what he is, an outstanding 3C.

Zacha is only 25, there's still some room for growth in his game. I think he's far more likely to perform better at 1C or 2C, depending on what Bergeron does.
