I dont think anyone is saying we should tank past this year. It is likely that 22/23 won't be a playoff year but there is no reason we shouldn't be in the playoff hunt come trade deadline next season.

This season...it is what it is. Eichel and Reinhart and Ullmark would have been our three of our four top players this season. Given that WE CANT SEEM TO FIND A TRADE TO GET US A TOP CENTER PROSPECT why not get one of Wright/Lambert/Savoie. The worst case scenario is getting the 6th pick and taking McGroarty. How else do we get a 1C prospect?

We collectively need to stop obsessing about 'elite centres', 'number 1 centres', 'blue chip 1C prospects' & so on.

Cozens might even be that guy. Mitt might even be that guy. Quinn might even be that guy... If none of them pan out they are all still going to be useful players at this point.

However - we don't NEED this type of player to be successful.

We're projected to have eight players on our roster who are 23yo or under. The majority of these guys have been high draft picks with potential to grow. This isn't a team of career AHLers. We also have promising players such as Peterka & Samuelsson to add into the mix.

This is all before considering the Eichel return.

Let’s be real, if we’re in the running for Bedard/Michkov this franchise will have virtually lost its fan base.
That would be 6 top 2 picks in a decade, starting with Sam, assuming we're there next season, and 3 seasons in a row.

Maybe I'd feel differently if it happened but right now that seems like such an embarrassment. Even if we became a decent team with those picks our reliance on tanking would be such a joke.

2014 & 2015 were rationalized by Chicago and Pittsburgh. We're past that point now

Wheeler: Team Canada 2022 world junior selection camp notes, standouts and lineup projection

C/RW Connor Bedard (2023): Bedard, like Wright a year ago, was going to have to do what he was at camp to do if he were going to make the team: score goals. So when he took a pass across the blue line on his first shift and ripped one past Dylan Garand, and added an assist on Roy’s 2-0 goal for his second point of the opener, and scored again to make it 3-0, and set up the obligatory overtime goal to make it four points on four goals, and was the best player on the ice, everyone took note (in a way that they didn’t with Wright’s play before he was cut a year ago, for example). He was good (though less so, at least relatively) in the second game, too, adding two primary assists to make it six points in two games. Throughout both, he had (and held) the puck a lot. He had some shifts that ran too long and there was some standing around in the neutral zone waiting for the play to come to him that removed him as a passing option. But those were my only nitpicks. That shot of his, when he drops it back into his stance and fires it, is lightning quick. It’s certainly one of the fastest releases I’ve ever seen (and it also pops). It’s off the blade before it even looks like he’s dropped it back. The one thing that I really picked up on with Bedard this week, though, was his ability on twists and turns one-on-one. It was evident in games and practices, where he shed bigger players in single coverage with such ease. And then in open ice, he’s still got that gallop to his stride from a standstill that helps him push up ice, catch the rush, and attack with his teammates whenever he falls behind the play. Quite the camp.

Matvei Michkov 'will be an NHL star,' but his long KHL contract commits him to Russia for years to come

Shoulda got one game in
Two other “not currently top 5 options” to keep an eye out on are LHD Oliver Bonk of the London Knights (in their system, but won’t be next season) and RHD Andrew Gibson of the Soo Greyhounds (16 year old rookie who destroyed the level below the OHL and is now on their PP2).

By next season Gibson will be talked about as a 1st rounder, and Bonk will be a 2/3 rounder.

Just outta curiosity, what position is it looking like our first pick will be? We’d be in the #2-8 range or something?
