Are you talking about Vilen? You mean top 10 in the prospect pool or top 10 in the league? If it's the latter I'd love to read your thoughts!
He isn`t top-10 prospect overall) Is he top-10 D prospect? It is a very optomistic view. Top-10 defensive D prospect? Very reasonable. But very hard to estimate, different defensemen play in different situations, play against different competitions, their defensive situations are very different and the cost of mistake is very different. And defensive IQ, positional game is very important for defenseman, you can`t be like forward - dumb, lazy and lose half of your zone, but still be very effective, because you have skating and shot. What Vilen faced and what junior level defensemen faced we con`t compare. We can compare tools only, if both are good in defensive zone control, gap control, escaping and puck battles.

I would say Vilen is very intriguing prospect with Marino\Siegenthaler ceiling. We need to watch him more to understand how good he really is. And of course he needs time to develop more, face more harder situations and study how figure them out, And only when he eventually understands - or does not understand, we will know how good he really is.

Tools are there, good defensive IQ for his age\level are there. I like him and I have him higher than Casey. I was happy after draft and we have disputes about his pick with Steve. But with defensemen it`s harder to project. Not as hard as with goalies. Overall I really like to have him. Good defensive defensemen brings win to you, cost less and needs to protect our future and actual QB`s like Hamilton, Hughes, Nemec and Casey. Hope Nemec will be good enough to make every work we ask. But even if he will be good enough on the both ends, anyway you need to have good partner for Nemec when he is with the puck\under pressure, both(Nemec and his partner) will face serious competition.

And I`m still not a fan of saving Bahl\trading Okhotiuk, I clearly understand and know something from the NJ kitchen(I'm talking nonsense, fictions, from where I could. really?) that desired outcome should be different, but in Meier trade you pay with everything before red line. Grier liked better prospects Shakir and Okhotiuk more, than Holtz and Bahl. And when we lost the depth of left defense, I hope Vilen will compensate for losses. And I`m rooting for him. Like I do for Orlov and Karpovich. Vilen is closer to be NHLer. BTW Orlov and Karpovich are very good left D prospects(not because they are from my lovely "axis of evil" but because I like their tools and their game). The way the Devils recruit left defenders is fascinating.

I will not tolerate any Arseni Gritsyuk disrespect.
People are making the same mistake three years in a row.

wow looks like ill be in the minority!

though my opinion is based on what i read lol

i think if Nemec went to a barren team hed be a Doughty/Hedman level dman, maybe even Lidstrom

though Luke is gonna set records offensively for us!

it just sounds to me like Nemec is what id make my defenseman in NHL23 which is great at everything - a consummate professional

luckily i get both!! mwuahahahaha
Hey, I have a question.

It's about your name.

Is that like the name of a character you created in Dark Souls or Diablo 4? 'Cause it really sounds like one. :)

Honestly, he should definitely make top-5. I’m just semi-skeptical we’ll see him over here. I was hoping he would have come over this off-season, but he signed with SKA for two years.

It’s Luke here, but imo the gap between Luke and Nemec isn’t that big, it’s pretty damn close. After Nemec it widens though. Such a blessing to have 2 of the 3 best D prospects.

No I get it, fear of signing is a totally valid reason to dock a player points. I’ve historically been low on guys like Misyul and Rykov, not because they were bad players per se but just because I was convinced they’d never come to North America. Even Miles Wood, I was convinced he’d do 4 years in college and go UFA.

I’m not as worried with Gritsyuk though, indications from what we know is that he’s coming in 2 years from all accounts.

While I'm not specifically worried about Gritsyuk, I'm pretty sure the Thrashers are still expecting Ilya Nikulin to sign any year now. There's always the chance that a KHL prospect just ends up not being interested.

And you have to wonder about Russian patriotism in the face of the on going war which the Russian government portrays as Russia vs NATO.

Gristyuk said about 2 months ago that he wanted to come over. His agent said so as well. Of course, that could always change, but I feel like it’s a pretty positive situation right now.

youre really close!

Illidan Stormrage is an important character from Warcraft and WoW lore (they make the Diablo games too)

though i was thinking of changing it every so often between my favorite characters!

wonder how often i can do that, it says sometime August i can change it

No Hoeffel?

What an embarrassing and awful move by LouConte to pass on Wayne Simmonds and pick Hoeffel instead. This is a move that badly sticks out.

Of course, Ray tried to right this wrong years later, but it was far too late and Wayne Simmonds was old, slow and washed up and rookie Jack also did nothing but slow him down even more

Just as Ray did by picking up all of K Palms, Moore, and MarJo after Conte picked Josefson while they were all available, as well as acquiring Vatanen years after LouConte picked Gelly and Urbom ahead of him. Though not without the price of Henrique, who is still a very good NHL player, while Sami has been out of the league for years now. Thanks again Ray.

And thanks Conte for Hoeffel over Simmonds.

I actually had to look up Hoeffel to confirm he didn't play an NHL game, which I didn't think he did and he didn't. He last played in 2021-2022 in Germany, where he had been playing since 16-17, but he's not listed as playing anywhere for 20-21.

I looked up David Hoeffel and found a podcast about music or something and was like ''Is he a musician now?'' then I realized his first name was actually Mike Hoeffel and not David Hoeffel when looking up Hoeffel hockey.

I was thinking his name was David because of David Wohlberg, another prospect forward we had at the same time, who also never got into a single NHL regular season game. Only he was picked in the 6th round a year after Hoeffel was picked in the 2nd round.
