PHLY: You mentioned the need for high-end talent. I know from the start – from your very first press conference as interim GM – you made it clear that this was a rebuild, not a tank. But there is an argument to be made that if high-end talent is the biggest need, the best and most efficient way to get it is to draft high. You guys are looking like you’re a lot better than expected – you’re not necessarily looking like you’re going to draft high. How do you get that high-end talent without drafting in the top-10?

"Well, we did draft high the last two years. So that would be the start of it. But like I said, when you’re not spending $12 million on a player, or even two like Edmonton does… Colorado has three or four high-end guys. We’re not going to be built that way. So depth will be important to us.

That’s kind of what we’re doing. You see it up front with some of our young guys kind of starting to come. We have so many young guys. Probably won’t have to pay the $12 million (for a guy), but we’ll pay to have the depth and be able to match Line 1 to 4 with teams."

I do not think he is saying that is all the elite talent they need. Not how I am reading it. Thanks for the link

I don't understand how we're sitting here talking about how it's blanketly foolish to trade anyone in this org short of Michkov. Not every trade even has to be vets for picks or vice versa.

The inability to make difficult trades is one of the defining factors of the orgs getting left in the dust.

Well, saying they won't be built with 3-4 high end guys like Colorado is in the Flyers Hall of Fame of dumb arrogant quotes. That quote will make a heartfelt speech during a pregame ceremony 15 years from now.

No, he isn't saying that's all they need. But he alluded to not picking that high again, despite the highest selected player (who wasn't even elite) saying he'll never play for the Flyers. And importantly, he isn't outlining any sort of path other than using prayer beads. They don't even desire to spend money on elite talent, with that arbitrary $12MM line, which means diddly-squat as the cap grows.

It's a great non-answer, because all his response says is "we're not getting more elite talent sans who we have already drafted".

Also thank you for remembering which interview it was, because I wouldn't have been able to

Vegas did just fine trading for veterans.
You stockpile assets, then target players who fill needs who fit your timeline.

Would anyone be unhappy if we emulated Carolina, with a better goalie pipeline?

In the end, it comes down to scouting and a GM who knows what he's doing, without that you can tank for a decade and be Buffalo.

Vegas decided putting a package together for Eichel was a good move.

This team decided putting a package together for Risto was a good move.

Same people who falsely equate trying to draft high-end talent to tanking are same people who use false equivalency to point to teams that have been bad for 10 years as evidence that it doesn’t work as if the Flyers haven’t been just as irrelevant for the same amount of time, failing to accurately identify incompetence.

This team is way more likely to be the next Calgary than it is the next Carolina.

Fletcher decided, not "the team."

There is no such thing, there are decision makers, we had three bad ones in a row, in Holmgren, Hextall and Fletcher.

Either Briere can make good trades or he can't. What his predecessors did has no predictive value.

How do get in position to draft high-end talent without tanking unless you have superior scouts and a GM? And the only way to know if they've built that kind of organization will be hindsight.

The Flyers actually haven't been a horrible drafting team, they've found G (#22), TK (#24), Sanheim (#17), Brink (#35), Hart (#48), Ersson 5th rd, Cates 5th rd, etc.. They just never committed to building a team through the draft. Hextall started, then stopped. Holmgren never tried, Fletcher was worse.

We'll see, Briere has to draft better, last season looks like a good start, accumulate draft picks, so far so good, He has 19 picks the next two drafts, including (3) 1sts, (4) 2nds. I'd like to see him pick up 2-3 more picks in the top 3 rounds at the TDL.

Then it comes down to development, they've invested in facilities and coaching staff, now they have to deliver the goods.

So now Fletcher decided that and not the “team?”

I thought it was a collaborative effort and Chuck was just following orders.
The first year Holmgren ran the show, the last year Fletcher jumped the shark.

Good thing Briere got rid of all the advisers and the assistant Gm that were all here for the Fletcher years then.

Having that talent is how you build the depth they imagine.

They still think talent is bad and to be minimized and honest grinding is all you need.

It's such a courageous approach!

The Flyers aren't Vegas.

They are something else unique. Just like Vancouver and Columbus are unique.
