I told you guys this was going to be a dud. Hey its not all bad, at least the Devils didn’t help a rival playoff team add a player.

Florida helped their rivals get Max Domi!? WTF? I get its Max Domi but still, that’s some wild shh..

It’s Brink and Khusnutdinov. I wouldn’t be surprised if both are good players. They’re great prospects. It was a solid bet to make but oh well his back was beyond f***ed and he couldn’t regain form

Ray gave up 2019 34th, 2020 37th, 2020 68th and 2021 36th picks in the Subban & Goose trade.

But sure, we couldn’t have drafted anybody good there (or traded up with our late 1sts and those 2nds, which is how you get to trade up).

Yes, this is an automated response.

I think Lou has adapted to the times in this regard. It's like when everyone was questioning whether the Leafs would give Matthews the maximum bonus package because Lou never let an ELC go over the maximum AAV as Devils GM, and then he gave Matthews the maximum and it was a moot point.

That said, when you adapt to the times in this way and your move is to sign Clutterbuck and Parise, maybe it's better to stick to the old-fashioned way of doing business.

He didn’t give all the bonuses to Marner though, giving him the whole “it’s the logo on the front & not the name on the back” and “you shouldn’t chase personal scoring goals blah blah blah” speech he gave Larsson too.

Marner was pretty pissed about that and that came back to bite the team in his contract negotiations.

And being generous with Matthews didn’t help, he wanted more money than McDavid. (And will again.)

You could be right about Brink and Khu-LotsOfLetters-ov. But we can't really concern ourselves with what WAS. We got PK so we are stuck with him.

It's that simple.

I know we as fans we are unhappy with the current state of the Devils, but the future is bright.

As the dust settles, it looks like the Lightning’s cup to lose. Maybe we should create a new threw with a poll. As good as these teams are, most have issues. Caps, Cats, and Leafs have issues in net. Even the Pens have questions after last years playoffs. Most of these teams are glass cannons too, Leafs, Pens, Cats and Rags. Boston is built for the playoffs but they failed to address their secondary scoring issue. It should come down to Canes and Lightning.

The west is a mess but I still need the Avs to prove to me they can make it out of the west. I’ll go with Flames-Lightning finals. Bold Predictions!

I mean... depth has been their problem ever since they traded Buch and brought in Reaves... so I'm really not seeing this "they struck out" narrative at all.

Maybe struck out isn't the right way to put it (I don't remember what my original comment was, haha)

I agree that they made some nice moves, but I thought that they were the team that made the most sense to push all their chips to the middle. No one that they got, for example, is as good as Buchnevich.

Seems like the teams need to figure that out and if Ottawa is ultimately at fault then they should probably be fine.

If Vegas is expected to ask for the list from Ottawa then they’re already being punished so probably don’t need anything additional. Although, a fine for trying to violate the players contract is probably reasonable too.

Technically Vegas could still trade Dadonov to free up cap space but anybody involved would not be eligible to play the remainder of the regular season.

If I had to guess what his ten team NTC looked like:

high tax + team with cap space: Anaheim, Los Angeles, Montreal, New Jersey, San Jose
non-playoff team with cap space: Arizona, Buffalo, Columbus, Detroit, Seattle

Sometimes players will leave off a capped out team like Toronto since they know there's no way they could fit them under the cap. I think Alex Goligoski's NTC got leaked and some thought it was a strange that he listed Los Angeles but not Anaheim. Some thought that it meant that he didn't want to live in LA but was okay a little further south, but it was because the Kings had cap space and a need at LD whereas Anaheim was well-stocked at LD and weren't really a logical team that would trade for him.

Vegas might be out of dance partners. But hypothetically, some team might be able to leverage this into a nice pick but at the cost of paying Dadonov 6.5 million in real cash next season.

The trade will just be voided and that is it. Stuff like this has happened before and in other sports I believe.

Kesler doesn't care since he doesn't play.
Moore may be upset but he's been around a lot and involved in many trades. He should hopefully remain well adjusted.

We aren’t tanking deliberately even now, if Fitz could getter a better goalie for something reasonable he would.

Not a Fun fact. We can get a new goalie on the NJ Devils after the deadline, the TDL is significant because any new player added to a NHL roster isn’t eligible for the playoffs.

Someone waives a goalie we can still take them. We can still make trades. (It doesn’t happen much at all, but you can do it.)

Edit: Whoops. Just learned that while you can still make trades after the TDL the newly acquired player is ineligible for regular season games as well as the playoffs. (And that goes for everyone except UFA signings.)

I’m responding to myself like a psycho because I repeated what turned out to be commonly held very wrong belief: that you could trade or pick up players after the TDL who could play in the regular season. (I guess if it was actually possible I would notice it happening a lot but I never thought it through I guess…)

In my defense, 1) numerous articles say this is a thing 2) it’s not in the CBA but in the NHL’s version of the Old Testament (from a post in Dadonov thread on the Trade board):

Sorry for any confusion.

That rule makes some sense now. Reminded me of 2007 when Rick DiPietro got concussed and missed the final seven games as the Islanders battling for the final playoff spot. Backup Mike Dunham stunk all season, so they found an unlikely hero in journeyman callup Wade Dubieliewicz instead of trading for a temporary goalie (and now we know they wouldn't have been allowed to). The end of the season is a hilarious one to look back on.

Final Thursday:
8. Montreal (90 points - 2 games remaining)
9. Toronto (89 points - 2 games remaining)
10. NY Islanders (86 points - 3 games remaining)

Toronto controlled its destiny with its final two games against NYI/MON. They'd lose to Islanders but Montreal lost to keep everybody alive.

Saturday:
8. Montreal (90 points - 1 game remaining)
9. Toronto (89 points - 1 game remaining)
10. NY Islanders (88 points - 2 games remaining)

Montreal/Toronto head-to-head to finish up the season on Hockey Night in Canada. Montreal had the tiebreaker over Toronto, so the Leafs had to win in regulation. Wild game, Leafs get up to a 3-1 lead but give up four consecutive goals in the second period. They rally back and win 6-5 in regulation to eliminate Montreal. Simultaneously the Islanders win on the road in Philadelphia. Toronto has the tiebreaker over the Islanders, so they're in as long as the Islanders don't win their finale.

8. Toronto (91 points)
9. Montreal (90 points)
10. NY Islanders (90 points - 1 game remaining)

Islanders finish on the road against us. Marty had started 78/81 games, so the team gives him the night off. Naturally Leafs fans are pissed. Islanders coast to a 2-0 lead. John Madden scores with four minutes left to cut the deficit in half then scores the tying goal with 1 second left on the clock.

Leafs fans have a glimmer of hope.

Game goes to shootout. Miro Satan and Zach Parise both convert. Shootout ace Viktor Kozlov puts the Islanders ahead as Brian Gionta is denied. Ryan Smyth can't seal the win and then we send out Sergei Brylin (over Elias?). Dubieliewicz makes the save to clinch the final spot for the Islanders.
